79 spider fuel pump question

Post by narfire »

Helping a fellow with his 79. No fuel comming out of the fuel line when he cranks the motor. Clear before the pump back to the tank (bubbles when blown through) clear after the pump-and filter. Wondering what side the pump lever should go on...top or bottom of the aux shaft lobe. If it is pooched I think I have another to try.
Thanks

The fuel pump lever goes on top of the axillary shaft lobe. It may take a few tries to get it right.

Chris, was the fuel pump that you gave me off of a 79? I tried to get it sitting on the lobe a few more times today, do I have to have the timing marks for the auxiliary pulley lined up towards the bolt below the tensioner? I still havent gotten an answer from my neighbor about getting the car towed out to your shop on saturday.

Thanks,

Zach

Yeup it was off a 79, I have another as well. When the cams are lined up at tdc, I believe the hole on the aux wheel should be in the vicinity of the 1 o'clock position. I don't know if I have another aux shaft to have a look as I believe I've whacked the ends off the ones I have/had. Lordco does not have the brake lines, you're going to have to order a set from Ital in Edmonton. Let me know when/if the car is comming over,I have to make a bit of room first.

The timing marks do not have to be lined up for the fuel pump install. The trick is to tilt the pump back so the actuating arm is angled up when it enters the block. After the pump is in and bolted up, install a cheap clear fuel filter like a Fram G-12 in between the pump and carb. Crank the engine a few times to confirm the pump is pumping. It may take a while for the gas to come from all the way back in the tank. If there is gas in the float bowl the car can run for a bit while the pump brings gas from the tank. If you don't see gas enter into the clear fuel filter after a while, remove and re-install the pump.

Thanks Matt. Zach will be taking the intake manifold off and swapping for a single plane and 34 dmsa we hope this weekend. I think when the manifold is off,we'll/ he'll have a better chance of getting it on properly.

Yeah, I actually took the pump off a few times and tried to angle the arm so it sit up in position. I gave it another shot today and heard a little knocking sound that scared me a little. I replaced all of the hoses and already have a clear fram g-15 filter between the pump and carb. I had actually just added a little extra hose to the intake hose and used a funnel to get some gas to the pump, with a cup on the other end to catch the gas, and tried to turn the car over a few times. I tried about 3 times today and never got a drop. I am a little freaked out that something like this > http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9030 may have happened to my lobe on the aux shaft.

How does something like that happen? Could that be the case? If so would I be better off trying to install an extremely weak electric pump?

Thanks,

Zach

Napa sells a really nice and cheap electric pump for 35dollars (with a cash account) and it works great, i think the running pressure ranges from 1.5-3psi so you dont need a regulator; I believe its a purolator pump.

Turns out that my auxiliary shaft broke in two. Does anyone know where I might be able to find another to fit a carb'd 79 2L fiat spider

in your shoes, what i would do is to fit an electric fuel pump. your car has the distributor on the cam tower, so with an electric pump there is no need for a functioning aux shaft.

Actually there is.. the oil pump runs off the shaft and you should have the shaft supported by the two bearing points. This one broke between the bearings  Anyway for a positive spin we(Zach) got to drop the pan, raise the engine and fish the end out and also will be changing out the front crank seal among other things :)
