Cant Belive It actually happened!
You always here about the poor guy who got a nut sucked down the intake into the cylander but I never had first hand knowledge of it ever happening. I always wondered how it was possible for the nut to actually go thru the intake and right on into the cylander. But i took a spare head and intake and tossed it on my block cause my old head cracked and the first replacement I had was pitted and leaked out the back cylander so i purchased a parts car and just swapped the head over fired it up ran good for 30 secs. or so then horrible noises. Here are the pics of the piston and head. http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc4 ... AG0006.jpg

Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
So do i replace the piston or put it back together and see what happens? Bunch of ol' taters are telling me to jb weld the head where it imprinted in but i'm skeptical of that actually staying in place. How much more can it hurt? Valve comes out and retracts smoothly doesn't seem bent or anything. Crap Crap Crap !
Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
Ooh! That left a mark.
Had a friend do it to a Ford POS and knock a hole in the top of the piston too.

Can't really make out first pic...
Do not need to JB the head. No worries bout piston really. That much impact is not good on anything (includinging rod) but this does not look like some high dollar project, I would put er back together and run it.
If nut imprinted where the valve seats, that would create issues. Close the valves in that hole, invert head, fill chamber with water. See if it runs out. If not, run it.

Yeah were the valve seats looks good but Right on I'm gonna fill the head with water this evening, if it doesn't leak I'll bolt it back on and see what happens it just amazes me that this actually happened to me.
Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
Hope you understood, fill the combustion chamber of the head with water and see if water runs past the valves and out the ports....

Yep I get cha on the combustion chamber fill with the head off. Yep that's a compressed nut. I think I'm gonna make a ring out of it and wear it everyday as a constant reminder that rushing may get the job done but it also might suck a nut into ol' cylinder number 1!

Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
nuts and other debris can fall down into the cylinder via the spark plug hole. i removed the head from my sedan because i thought i saw something fall into on of the cylinders while changing the plugs. if something actually fell in i never found it. man, what a hassle that whole thing was.

Better safe than sorry, I guess one of those small flexible camera's may have helped a lot?dhagood wrote:nuts and other debris can fall down into the cylinder via the spark plug hole. i removed the head from my sedan because i thought i saw something fall into on of the cylinders while changing the plugs. if something actually fell in i never found it. man, what a hassle that whole thing was.
I get sooo paranoid when I take out my plugs etc, I do try and get in the habit of having a clean cloth stuffed in any of the holes that are exposed or at least taping them up.

Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
i'd have loved to use a small flexible camera in that situation. if they had them in 1979, i sure didn't know about it.

LOL I don't think any camera from 1979 would have worked, would it have been 8mm back then??
I remember my Dad had a MASSIVE video camera with a MASSIVE and HEAVY recording unit but I'm sure it was the early 80's

Re: Cant Belive It actually happened!
Put the head back on last night. timed it put it all back together and sounds good no knocks or clicks. It was nerve racking the first time i turned it over with the starter(I did hand turn it over bought 15 twenty revolutions) But everything seems ok! Hopefully Come the first nice day of spring she'll be on the road again its only been 4 years without seeing the road. Now on to brakes and why none of my lights work. But that doesn't really concern me cause she starts and runs!
