Air Filter

I'm finding there are fewer and fewer companies that produce stock air filters for my 76. Is there an upgraded set up that works well?

I don't know about the 76. But a 65 Cadillac air filter fits my 79. It's just a little taller,
and the air cleaner doesn't close all the way. It gives a little intake roar that sounds nice.

Thats a good idea. I was thinking of trying a taller filter. Will pick one up in the am to give it a try.

Let me know how it works out. My '76 that I'm trying to get running has an air filter which must be ancient...it's filthy. I'm looking for a good replacement.

You can take your old filter with you to checkers and compare it to one of the millions they have on the back wall. I found one the worked just fine that way

Ok, I ordered in a filter. Got a Wix 42160. Thats what the "book" called for. Now I dont know the make or part number of the filter I need to replace but the new WIX filter dosent fit as well. The ID is about 0.50" bigger, no big deal. But the height is about 0.25" shorter makinig it pretty useless. My question is what is the right part number?

Funny, I just bought one from Checker O Reilly yesterday. They had to order it but it was about 8.00 bucks and it fits well. I can get the part number if you need it.

Found my problem with the WIX I ordered. They sent the right box but it was the wrong filter inside. Go figure....

I have two new in the box fram air filters . I bought them for my 80 carb only to find the 80 is not the same as the rest of the years. There in my shed, fram CA-660. I paid $10.00 each plus shipping.Ifanyone wants them let me know blackmore228@gmail.com

People already spoke to where to get a stock filter. If you replace the whole assembly with a sprint-type filter you'll have a happier motor. The stock types were pretty restrictive. All of the vendors sell quality replacement systems. Bonus: you can see your motor and access your carburetor with the sprint types.

Ok, when you say sprint type do you mean those smaller rectangular filters? Also what about the seasonal setting on the stock breather set up? Does it make a difference without it?

Yes, that' s a sprint type. Midwest Bayless calls it a "Meaner Cleaner" and International I think calls theirs a Sprint. No need to get silly with a K&N, they are a rip-off, get one from the vendors.

Seasonal setting switches the intake from cold air (which originally connected to a hose that came from the grille area) to hot air pulling through the exhaust. If you live in a very cold climate I would assume it makes a difference, here in the deep south it doesn't get very cold...ever, so I wouldn't even know how to test it.

Well I just moved from the deeper south (Daytona Beach) to North Carolina where it can pretty cold.

I'd say if it is an issue then put the big filter house back on when it is cold.

I seriously doubt you'll ever need it; these engines love cold dry air.

It does seem like on cold crisp mornings it has a bit more get up and go.
