What kind of ignition is this?

Post by Klayfish »

As I'm starting to go through my orange Spider, I realize (at least I think) that the car doesn't have the stock dual points ignition system. It doesn't look like what's described in the Haynes and Chiltons' manuals I have. I assume Bosch wasn't standard equipment in an Italian car. 8) Can you help identify this? By the way, the picture of the inside of the cap didn't come out well. It looks dark inside, but that's just the lighting. It's very clean inside.

It looks like a single points distributor from an earlier car. That dist cap looks like the one from my 72. See it in this pic?

The distributor is a stock Marelli unit. Dual point model with one set of points removed. The coil is an aftermarket one, and should not be a problem if it works . That coil is currently sold by some of the vendors as a replacement/upgrade to the stock unit.

That looks like the stock dizzy on my 76. And yep, it has been switched from dual points to single. Cap & Rotor look the same also.

the mechanical advance is under the plate rather than on top like the 2L dizzys

I think dual points began in 1974, and vacuum advance in 1980. I also think that all mechanical distributors had centrifugal advance

Awesome, thanks for the help! Is there any disadvantage in performance, etc...to removing one set of points? I'm a long way off from this car being roadworthy, but just curiuos how the change is going to effect the car? I've got another dizzy in my parts bin, as well as some coils.

I'm no expert but I have tried both single and dual point set up. Mind you I'm still (see "stumped" thread) having carb issues but I saw no real difference with the two ways. However you do end up with an extra set of points you can toss in the glove box just in case with the single set up.
