Throttle pull cable..................

I have a 78 124 Spider and on the left side of the steering wheel under the dash is a knob that reads "throttle". I followed the cable the knob is attached to and at the end is a wire with a complete loop. It's not attached to anything. Does anyone know where it goes and how it attaches? I am thinking it was to raise the idle when first started kind of like a choke. Or maybe a primitive cruise control? Pictures would also help. Thanks!

it's wierd cause i have the owners manual and it dosen't mention this at all. mine went to the left side of the accelerator pedel/ shaft. it seemed to be a way of increasing idle speed i guess for cold start. i pulled mine out and it only raised rpm to 2500. i then had problems with it retracting so i just yanked the whole thing out which gave me room for a real oil guage.

Thats just what it is for. It conects to the throttle to help out a bit on cold starts. I will post a few pics tomorrow on how it conects.

The only reason I know about this question is one of the first things that went wrong on my Spider was a broken throttle cable. It's amazing what you can fix with an extra Dean Markley guitar string. Might last longer than a real throttle cable. NIckle plated, round wound, stainless steel core.........you never know. lol

Just to add to the confusion and I don't know if the 124's had both but my uncles 132 use to have the choke cable as well as a 'hand' accelerator, a crude from of cruise control....obviously it didn't switch off when you hit the brakes......

and that is just like the 850. a primitive cruise control. of course I don't drive on the highway anymore with baby so I use it like the others to raise the idle when it's cold.

I wouldn't exacly call it "cruise control" since it doesn't automatically maintain a set speed. Even the earliest cruise control sensed speed and adjusted the throttle. My owners manual calls it a throttle knob. As such it can be used to maintain engine speed. I think the intent is to use it as a form of speed control. If you pull it out and turn it clockwise it should lock in place and hold that engine speed until it is released. Not an ideal situation for cruise control since the brake doesn't disengage it. The only time I use it is if I am on the freeway and am confident there aren't any deer in the area.

I did call a crude form (even though I spelt form as from?)................Maybe it was so the itallians can have an espresso and cigarette at the same time while cruising on the open 'strada' ???????

i would caution using this as "cruise control" since pulling it out to maintain 65mph would have the engine at half throttle and if you were to push in the clutch to change gears or to slow down without releasing this "throttle control" you would gun the motor to max rpm. which isn't good

Very good point, and the throttle pull has been know to stick a bit from time to time. I would hate to have that happen in a "think quick" situation.

Ok, I see the bracket, the white plastic tab, and the looped end. But where does it attach to the throttle?

If you follow it all the way you will see how it actually is hooked to the throttle pedal. When your under there and you have found that piece of white plastic move the gas pedal, then it will make sense.

Yep, I saw how it works. I hooked it up and played with it. Then I took it apart. For me, it looks dangerous. The cable has a small bend in it and seems to not work smoothly. I just see something going wrong and it possibly sticking. My choke works fine so really no need I guess. Thanks
