smog/air pump question
smog/air pump question
I have a 1978 124 Spider California car with stock 1.8L motor and smog/air pump. It passes smog but I am wondering if removing the belt to the pump will give me better performance. Also, would I need to plug or disconnect anything. Thirdly, will it effect the idling or any other issues? Thanks!

Re: smog/air pump question
Hey Ken,
I'm gonna remove the pump from my '75 Spider.
Wanna buy it cheap?
I see no need to keep it for myself.
With regards to performance, I would think that removing the drag of the pump should be beneficial.
Not sure how it would affect the way the car runs though.
I simply removed the belt from mine back in October last year. Didn't seem to have any adverse effects
I still knock down 25 MPG on my daily commute.
I've put almost 12,000 miles on this little Spider and I love it.

Did you notice any gain in performance at all?

Re: smog/air pump question
I can't say one way or the other.
I still think we need to get together and do a comparison drive.
You should come on down to the Florin Road Radio Control field sometime on a Sunday.
Or maybe we just meet somewhere halfway in the Rancho Cordova / Sunrise area.
The main reason I disconnected mine was to prevent a pump failure from damaging my engine by hosing the cam drive belt.

Re: smog/air pump question
Certainly smog pump uses some horsepower. But so little you are going to gain nothing by removing belt. At same time, you are going to lose nothing by disabling air pump either, if it is legal in your area. Your call.

I will Roy. Still putting the car back together so it's not ready for a trip anywhere. What is Florin Road Radio Control field? You have a radio controlled airplane or car?RoyBatty wrote:I can't say one way or the other.

Re: smog/air pump question
Well, it's been making a little noise. I replaced the V-belts and it was a little less noisy but I was thinking of just taking the belt off until next smog check. The only reason I want to remove the belt is to save it from more wear and tear or possible failure.majicwrench wrote:Certainly smog pump uses some horsepower.
