So after replacing the alternator with a new "used" one the problem was still there. I then began looking at removing fuses to see which circuit was energized. I removed fuse 4 and that solved the problem. There appears to be no negative effects as everything appears to be working as it should. Can anyone tell me what fuse 4 does and what I may be missing? Very strange.

My wire diagram for a 1981 Spider shows fuse 4 is for the right hand headlight high beam. The fuse closest to the steering wheel is fuse 1. Maybe some previous owner modified your wiring.

That is what mine wiring diagram showed as well. Are the lights supposed to work when the car is off? If so, maybe there is a back feed from the lights which would get a constant 12V. The right front headlight still works, weird, huh?

Do both the high and low beam work???? If they do then I think someone has changed the wiring from its original state. Do you know if you have headlight relays in the car ???
