Universal linkage for 32/36? Need help!

Post by Fiat88 »

I'm trying to install the empi universal linkage kit on my 32/36 dfev. Does anyone have a pic on the correct way it hooks up. just want to make sure I installed it correctly. Is the bracket and return spring used which comes with the kit?

I don't know if there is a 'correct' way, but I didn't change any of the brackets on the carb, or the spring.

I just used the ball-ends and threaded rod to connect to the throttle cam on the carb to the stock throttle linkage. I used the hole below the stock ball-end to mount the smaller ball-end that came in the kit.

the kit comes with more pieces than you will need, that way it fits several different carbs

It seems that the linkage rod is too long which connects from the cam cover to the linkage. I think I have something hooked up wrong with the kit.

You did not do anything wrong. The 2L rod is longer than a 1800 rod. I assume you are using a 1800 manifold on a 2L? Can you shorten the rod and rethread it? I think the threads are 6.00mm x 1.00

I cut my rod down, I forgot to mention that. Took 3 seconds. I didn't need to rethread, but I did use a different junk nut to make sure the threads were okay. No way it is going to work without shortening the rod (at least on my car.)

It also wouldn't have worked very well without the 20mm spacer Mark sold me...

That explains it! Yup 1800 manifold on 2L. I'll try and shorten it. Thanks guys! :D

You don't have to shorten it! Just bend it into a Z shape!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

I do supply the rod a bit longer than necessary since it's a lot harder to make it longer rather than shorten it

Long story short me and my friend ended up making a new linkage rod out of some threaded rod from sears and some of the parts from the kit. It seems to work just feels a little stiff, I noticed on the stock rod it has like a spring tension in the middle, the rod we made is straight and solid. I'll take a pic tomorrow and run it pass you guys to get some feedback.

At first I tried using my original rod but the thread was too small to fit in the ball stud end from the empi linkage kit. I think i just realized why, is my automatic trans linkage rod a different rod size then the manual cars rod?
Mine is this spring loaded type.

My friend and I made a custom straight rod but I see the original rod is spring loaded, by not having a spring action rod will that be ok. I guess back to the drawing board.

it should be fine, but why couldn't you use the straight rod I supplied?
