1981 Spider, Charlotte, NC
After 26 years of wanting one, I have one.
Some surface rust (wheel arches, etc), she'll need tires and an alignment and need to figure out the cause of the soft brakes.
Getting this car is a dream come true.

The bumps give more clearance for the taller engine.

What kind of Bultaco is that? I used to have a Montesa Cota.

That's a 1972 Alpina Model 85. I've had every individual part of that bike in my hands at one point. Fires on two kicks.

And then the spark plug fouls?sixcharlie wrote: Fires on two kicks.
In 1980, I was riding in Nashville (about 60 miles from where I was living) on a Sunday afternoon. And then the chain broke. Nothing was open on Sunday afternoons then. If some guy hadn't stopped and had a spare master link, I might still be there.

The carb is in a wonderful state of tune. The countershaft eats sprocket nuts. So I throw a chain often.

Welcome aboard. Nice toys. Good luck with the Spider project. Definitely worth the effort. We are getting enough Charlotte-ians (sp) that we could have our own chapter. I just found out a guy at my church bought a spider recently and hasn't been able to get it running. I will turn him on to the forum and see if I can help. Once again, welcome, and maybe we can all get together someday.

Re: 1981 Spider, Charlotte, NC
Hello and Welcome! I had a Bultaco Mercurio while in college. Never a problem with the chain, but if the stop lamp burned out (usually vibration), I couldn't kick-start it! Had to bump and run. Somehow, this lamp was part of the ignition circuit, which was rather primitive; not even a key. (But it was still more reliable than a Triumph!)
I still remember the smell of Blendzall.
