Timing light question

Post by kensmith »

I have used my timing light on my Chevy motors by connecting to #1 plug wire and firing the strobe at the balancer/timing mark. I have a 1978 124 Spider I want to check timing. It has dual points. If I use #1, how do I match the crank pulley and degree mark? My car has a yellow timing belt cover with 3 marks. I don't see any marks on the crank pulley or I am not looking in the right area. Can someone tell me where the pulley marks are and how to line up with the marks on the timing belt cover in order to check for proper timing? Thanks!

there should be a notch in the outer edge of the crank pulley. the 3 marks on the belt cover correspond to TDC (long one) and 5btc and 10btc. either #1 or #4 will work as the notch passes by twice with every cycle. (set dizzy to #4). the notch is difficult to see. many put a dab of yellow or white paint on it.
