engine stalls when fan kicks in

I need some help and ideas. I have a 1980 Spider with automatic transmission. When the engine is cold and warming up it runs fine, as soon as the radiator fan kicks in, the engine will stall at idle or coming to a stop or turning. I am thinking the alternator is not putting out enough juice to run the fan and fire engine. I increased the idle to 1500, and as soon as it it put in gear, it stalls. Any ideas?
