What tools do I need?

Post by McFlash »

Next week I pick up my first project - a 1981 FI 2000 - and I want to know what tools I should keep in the glovebox, trunk and/or in my garage. I've seen tool kits on eBay, but they seem more novelty than necessity.

What tools shouldn't I go without?

This is what I have in the shop and haven't needed anything else.
Metric wrench set both angle ends and straight with open/box ends.
Metric socket set with 2 sized wratchet wrenches and both regular and long shaft sockets.
Spark plug socket
Couple sizes of swivel sockets
Large and small vise grips
Rubber mallet
Medium and small flat head and Phillips screwdrivers
Good heavy duty low profile hydraulic jack and stands
Needle nose pliers
Regular pliers
Good regular hammer
5 lb sledge hammer
Crow bar small and large
Torque wrench(I don't have one I just borrow the neighbors if ever needed)
Pipe wrench large and small
Various power tools like a drill and 4" grinder

Sounds like a lot but I've got less than $200 in tools accumulated over a few years. You don't need top of the line tools. Most of mine are Stanley or some generic stuff from one of the big home imp stores.

As for the car, I'd keep the socket set, screw drivers, and the wrenches and maybe a vise grip. Most of the bolts are 8,10,13mm.
