Later Model Hood Torsion Spring Adjustment

Post by TX82FIAT »

Folks, I recently adjusted the hood on my 82'. The hood closes properly with proper gapping and no vibration. The issue is that the hood is now at about 45 degrees when open and comes down very easily with almost no pressure or even a slight breaze. Has anyone adjusted the torsion spring? Is it as simple as turning the one large bolt on the underside of the hood slightly to tighten?

My guess is that when re-aligning things I reduced friction the hood now moves up and down with greater ease. Hope it is just an adjustment and i don't need to replace the torsion spring.

this spring is the most annoying design fiat ever came up with. i took it off my car and installed an early version sliding rod. the big button on the hood is there to hold the hood at the end of the spring. the amount of torsion is created by the ends bolted down to the radiator cross member. check to see if the rod ends are rotating in the clamps.

That makes sense. I'll check it out tonight. Hopefully I can manage some small adjustment or park on a slight decline. :?
