Smog Pump Bypass Valve Not Activating

Post by misterb »

The "diverter by-pass control valve" that sends vacuum to the smog pump bypass valve in my 78 never gets 12V. The problem seems to be that the electrical thermo-switch under the intake manifold is stuck in the open position. I think it's supposed to close when the engine reaches operating temp, which then allows the smog pump to push air into the exhaust manifold.

If I need to get this thing to pump air into my exhaust to pass an emission test can I just bypass the thermoswitch so the pump is never bypassed? Would this have any side effects (hard to start, poor idle, etc...)?

Can you post a picture of what you are talking about. Also do you have the wiring diagram for your car?

I yanked the pump off before I ever got my car running, so I'm not familiar with the parts or how they work in the circuit. I do, however, have a parts tub with some smog stuff in it. If you end up needing something let me know.

you could just run the vacuum hose directly to the diverter valve, it won't affect running or starting

I have 1978 California spider: How exactly are the hoses supposed to be hooked up from the manifold to the electro valve and from the electro valve to the diverter valve? The air pumps input and output hoses are obvious but i'm confused about the bypass valve hoses. Lastly is it two red and blue wires that hook into the thermo switch under the intake manifold for the air pump bypass? Also when exactly is the electro valve supposed to energize and how would I test to make sure the electro valve is operating when it's supposed to. I live in CA and have to have all this stuff hooked up and working.

I'm following up on my previous post. I didn't see anything on this already in the forums so if anyone has any ideas then please let me know, or if I missed any relevant, pre-existing threads then please send me the link. Does anyone happen to know at what temperature the diverter valve bypass thermo switch closes, and how the bypass hoses from the bypass electro valve should be routed onto the diverter valve? Lastly does anyone happen to have any pictures of their diverter valve properly hooked up? I'm not finding too much on google images. Lastly does anyone know of an appropriate substitute for an ignition mode thermo switch for a 78? I believe the thread size is 22 x 1.0. I enjoy all that this amazing forum offers to the FIAT enthusiast community.

Temp..do you have original valve? If so it will usually have the temp it opens/closes on it e.g. 85

Picture...your best bet is to find an old manual that has the "maps" of the vacuum hoses. Mitchell made manuals full of these maps, I may have one buried somewhere. this is not an easy thing to find.
Replacement.... do not know of a replacement but one is out there if you look. Without some experience in all these valves and dodads it will be a tough search.

Someone with more experience with CA and all the BS there will likely have some solid advice.
I assume you are trying to meet emission specs??
