Electronic ignition lock

Post by Jimb »

On the top of my steering column is a slot for an electronic fob that must be inserted for a couple of seconds and then removed before the ignition key will work. There is a tiny red blinking light beside the slot that goes out once the fob is inserted.
Is this typical for certain spiders or is it unique to the volumex?
Mine is a 1985.

I've never heard of any Fiat Spider of any year having that.... It could simply be an aftermarket security system.

No it's built into the column...and it's in the manual.

Pininfarina Spiders originally came with a toggle style switch located on the top steering column cover. Replacement column (or combo) switches did not have this switch. It appears that you column switch was replaced an perhaps someone installed an aftermarket alarm light in the remaining hole.

I don't recall seeing wireless fob style keys (ones w/o a traditional metal key) until sometime much later on Euro cars.
