On my '75 the drivers door cable snapped. I know my local hardware store has the cable and cold shuts to let me replace the cable
Does anyone know the length it should be.
I know the idler lets you adjust for tension but it does not have a lot of travel to make up for errors in cable length.

OK then , never mind. I fixed all on my lonesome.
I measured the remnants of the broken cable and added approx 1/4" to that, I took into consideration the location of the idler pulley.
I then cut a new cable from 1/16" stock I got from the local Ace hardware store.
The correct winding procedure took me a bit to figure out, but I was able to get it right by looking at diagrams and thinking it through.
Performing the winding procedure was something of a challenge in that I found myself wishing for a third hand.
Once wound up I secured it to the drum with a tie-wrap.
I installed the regulator and routed the cable over the pulleys.
(Insert many expletives here) I couldn't get the cable down around the aft bottom pulley. Too SHORT! But why??
I measured three times before cutting and had all of the old cable to check the measurement.
Ahaa? Maybe if I unwrap from each side by 1/2 a turn??
Yes that means I had to cut off one of the cold shuts that secured the cable to the spool. But no big issue that.
Unwound some cable from the drum as described and reinstalled.
BAM! it works GREAT!
Now to fit those RX-7 seats into my Spider...

So now you see, it can be done. Don't be afraid to give it a shot if your regulator is in good shape.

Do u remember how long it was u had to cut ? I have the same problem
