Replacing all brake lines and keeping what I can.

Post by jimmycakes401 »

I'm getting my car in the garage on Wednesday. Going to put it up on stands and start restoring the entire brake system. It hasn't been on the road in about 18 years. Going to replace all the brake lines and E-brake cable. Then I'm going to pull the rotors and see if they are too far gone to get resurfaced. Does anyone have suggestions while doing this? I suppose I should buy brake line in bulk and not in segments. I do have a flare set.

Don't spend the money resurfacing the rotors. They are very inexpensive ($15-20 each)and already "thin" as it is. Surfacing might get you a few miles but tend to warp right away because they are thin.

Do you recommend a vendor for the discs? My local shops actually carry them so I was just going to go there. But I think they are more like $30.

I'm also thinking that I'll need new calipurs. It basically sat around for 18 years. Any thoughts on that? Obviously I will launch out the cylinders and inspect them just in case. I can easily grab a seal kit down the street. I don't think I'll want to pay for a complete overhaul kit when I can find places that sell them reasonably cheap.

Any of the regular Fiat vendors would have them, IAp, Vicks etc. You will have to pay shipping of course and wait for delivery. I ahve found some of the local shops have parts but they are more likely to be more expensive even if they have them. I would order the seals for the calipers at the same time. Only thing to be really wary of is piting on the pistons and sleeves. Otherwise very easy to replace the seals on the front ( rear are a litle more work because of the e-brake arm ( search posts for proper proceedure)).

Advanced Auto here in Westerly can get seals, calipers and more. Woo! As low as 38.99 for refurbished. I'm not too picky. As long as my car stops and is safe. I can always rebuild my originals if needed.

Many folks have had quality issues with "big box" parts store Fiat calipers, so examine yours carefully upon receipt, particularly the bleed screw seat.

Your Fiat uses DIN flares, so make sure you have that tool, not the more-common SAE set.

Here's some more info from a previous thread; http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... &sk=t&sd=a

Awesome. Thanks for the link. I'm going to go check out the flares. I have a standard set. My father in law may have some other stuff.

Searching around the net for this DIN set. Got a quick link to a moderatley priced set? My SAE set wasn't cheap. LOL
