Slow engine turn over.

Post by tfitzgerald »

Hi Guys,

1981 Spider 2000

I am having a problem turning the engine over where as it feels as if the battery is very low. Sometimes i just get a click from the solenoid and other times it will start but turn over slowly as if the battery was weak.

I have a brand new battery and starter in the car.
I have cleaned the positive and negative terminals from the battery as well as put a new terminal on the positive side so the connections are good. I have cleaned and verified the positive post on the starter side all looks good.

What can i be missing? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you checked your ignition timing?

Hi Ron,

Definately not the timing.. as i mentioned, it turns over as if the current is low to the starter.

Check the the ground strap from the engine to the frame. A poor ground connection will not allow the required current to flow to spin the starter.

I assume you've got it running by now.
For others reading this post I'm having similar problem on my car.
as part of the diagnosis I used my jumper cable to connect directly from the negative post on battery to block.
Car turned over (and started) like a charm.
So clearly problem is in ground cirtuit on my car :-)
