Brighter Dash Lights

Post by pressonregardless »

I've read a few post's and want to know if anyone has swapped the instrument lights standard 194's (3.78 watt, .27amp) bulbs for the 168's (4.9 watt, .35 amp) bulbs (22% more). Since the 168's pull only .07amps (70ma)more changing out all the instrument panel bulbs ( 8 total ) would be .56 amps extra ( 560 ma.). I don't believe this extra 1/2 amp will trip fuse #8? If so, the off set would be to install LED's in the side marker lights.

My hole point would be brighter incandescent lights in the instrument panel and preserve the "warm" feel with out going to the on/off sharp white of LED's. Any thoughts? I have wood panel, second attempt going in now (still grateful to Denise) made of Red Oak stained with a light American Oak stain. Next will be glove box lid #2, ugh......my glove box is all warped from heat and nothing I have done will straighten it out. But that's another post. (ps. we just made a 600 mile road trip to Tahoe from the CA central Valley over 8000ft Ebbits pass! !)

Look for a later glovebox, which were plastic vs. the cardboard ones of earlier cars.

ps If your gauge glass is clean, the standard bulbs should provide plenty of light.

I appreciate looking for the plastic glove box. I am not sure how mine got so warped, the top looks like a roller coaster. I guess the PO left it (dash) in the direct San Joaquin California sun for "years". I tried to straighten with a hair dryer in the sun but could not get it hot enough on a 104' day. Let me know what you find.

Instrument Lights: New Red Oak panel is in! Looks great Now I also find out my instrument lights are receiving about 9v and the rheostat is dropping about 3v. So may venture into some math and parallel a 5 to 10 ohm 10W resistor with the rheostat to drop the total resistance by 1/2 but preserve its function.
