Dripping Black Goo

Post by texasmojo »

I have had my '82 Spider 2000FI for a little over a week. It has been taken care of pretty well by PO and most things I plan on working on are cosmetic. However, there is one thing that is really bugging me. There is this "black goo" dripping from the lower edge (lock side) of the trunk lid and the front end of the hood. It's just two small areas but it appears to be coming from between the two panels that make up both lids. It's like a mix between rubber and tar. I've been able to clean it up without a lot of trouble but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or has any idea what this stuff is? Thanks in advance.

I hate to tell you this, that black goo is what hold the body together. Once it starts dripping out, there is no stopping it, and soon it will be dripping out of everywhere. Someone must have gotten car too hot.
But since I am a nice guy, I will take it off your hands and see what can be done. I live in a cooler climate so I will have more time to deal with it before it all falls apart. Please ship to:
Keith Meyers
3576 Hwy 2 S
Libby MT 59923

Include the signed title and bill of sale. I will let you know how the repairs are going in a few years.

Its likely undercoating or a paraffin/wax based protectant sprayed on by a dealer or previous owner. Parked in the sun the trunk sheet metal may get hot enough to soften or melt it causing it to drip out.

My 82 was doing this in the trunk. I covered the holes with aluminum duct tape. Gives it a little bling when I open the trunk.

Ditto with my 81. It's rustproofing goo. Ziebart or factory stuff. Scrape it up and sell it on Ebay as "Rare Fiat Spider droppings". Probably get $300 for it!

Hahaha! Thanks all for the info. Well, even in the garage it's been over 100 for 64 days. I've only had it a couple of weeks and noticed some dripping out of the trunk when I picked it up (garaged in Missouri). Hopefully, this isn't the only thing hold the car together or I might have to keep it in "cold storage" during the warmer months!

Thanks again for the thoughts (and humor)!
