Our new LeMons car is home!

Post by ga.spyder »

After last years adventure,I was itching to get into another Lemons race.I was to team up with my buddy, and build up a Rabbit GTI,but that fell thru.I had recruited kmac as a teammate.Denise has gotten so involved with gokarts, that she didnt have time.We were sunk!! Then,Michael and Jen Staton(4babycar) made us a offer on a car they own.It is a running car that had been set up for track days by a p/o.Konis and performance springs all around.2 litre motor with a ported single plane intake.1800 head with a spare included.7'' BWA basket wheels, electric fuel pump ,ignition master switch,etc...Basically we need a cage, battery, muffler, and install seat and harnesses. Thanks Michael and Jen!The body has a lot of rust in the arches and rockers, but is perfect for our pupose.Crossmember, shock mounts, floors are rock solid! Me and kmac will be started on it soon, and hope to make the LeMons series biggest event ever,at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Oct.Here are some pics
My buddy from the UK stopped in and gave his opinion....the Stig!!!!!!!!

The Stig? Oh please....is that your new helmet? Very nice.
Good luck with your project, Craig. Make sure you get those fellas motivated. You remember how time can get away from ya when getting ready for a race. I'll come down and be your cheerleader. Maybe the engine won't blow then.

Nah....thats my old helmet!!     You are right about the time getting away.Of course everytime we had a work day,we were the only ones to show up.And I drove 4 hours each way to get there. At least kmac only lives 1 1/2 hours away.As you know ,you have to go thru the middle of nowhere to get to my house!

Craig,

Very cool. And the car only cost $500 I bet. What a deal.

I think you better dirty up that motor.

I like the stance of the car - I would have thought it would be lower with the performance springs(?)

The car actually cost less than $500! The deal was he stripped the interior,Ansa exhaust, dual carb setup, roll bar,etc.. The car was bought as pictured.Great starting point for what we plan to do.
The car does sit a little high.I dont quite know why and I cant get it off the trailer to look,as it isnt running. The suspension is very stiff though. It is bucked down tight by the straps, and that may have something to do with it.

Go git 'em, Craig! And leave those big bumpers on - you might need them!

Hey Craig, Ben, Lucy and baby Issac Hayes are here at the moment. Ben is most impressed with the Stig photo as he was a guest at Top Gear last year but didn't get to meet him :( Having read your latest adventure he passed the info on to the F1 team and they want to know how the project is coming along . . . So, what's the latest?

Hamilton let me down at Spa, but hey, I'm still ahead of you

Unfortunately, time constraints for all parties involved have prevented any serious effort to progress the Spider towards "track readiness" . Between work, family, FFO prep of our "real" Spiders for Craig and I, and various other distractions, a Chump car work day has not fallen into place.
Craig and I managed to spend a few hours on the car a number of weeks ago removing unecessary bits and pieces. We did not have all the parts necessary to install the stock carb from my 74 and try and to get things running - I've got those bits in hand now. Hopefully in the next few weeks we can get our schedules coordinated to at least get the car running and get a solid picture of just what will be required to put the car on the track.
