In TX you have to pay an annual fee plus get an inspection. It is a fee and not a tax so everyone pays the same amount accross the board new or old. It's about 56 bucks per car annually. I forget what my motorcycle costs per year. You also have to pass a safty inspection which is pretty simple and cost about 35 bones. But, I have California cars and trucks so I haven't had to worry about the inspection as the CA vehicles come with so much extra smog equipment they can pretty much blow away the emmission tests her in TX even running at their worst.
On the other hand, because this is classified as a FEE and not a TAX, President Bush made a special exemption for TX residence and we get to deduct all our sales tax paid throughout the year on our annual federal tax return. If you don't keep track of them, they have a simple formula that is based on AGI. O-dummy will more than likely put an end to that though

Jesus, Taxachussetts is nowhere near that bad....
Challange the bill.

Re: Fiat Apraised value
Don't feel bad about the high tax- California reams you to begin with, then doubles the registration fee every time it's budget is in the toilet. They do a lot of other nice things to like furlough their firefighters, during brush fire season...) And now our mushed mouth comic book action hero governor, ol' Arnie, wants to kill our dogs if picked up by animal control to save "kennel costs" - hey moving back to CT (Southington) doesn't sound all that bad, but my Fiat may rust quicker..
Re: Fiat Apraised value
I have a 1978 Fiat Spider that is in mint condition in terms of the interior and exterior, under side was sprayed with undercoating by the dealer and it has no rust (seriously!). The exterior is original cream with red and black interior and a black top. All original alloy wheels.
The engine has approximately 75K miles on it and runs great except I am having an issue with a grinding sound between first and second gear (common) that needs to be addressed. I need to determine the value to sell it or at least split the value with the ex through a divorce. It is very difficult to find any consistent sources and I figured the experts here would know. Thank you.

Re: Fiat Apraised value
Sell it to a buddy real cheap. What is she going to do? She'll argue about it but all you need to do is show the receipt and proof of the money going into the checking account. After the divorce, buy it back. You'll still have your car.

Washington; once 30 years old can be registered as a 'collector vehicle'. One time fee and good for life. License on my 2008 Ranger is $56.

Hey Salty,I need to determine the value to sell it or at least split the value with the ex through a divorce.
Here's my 02 cents. A real clean 78, stock, let's say $6,000 retail and that's high. Transmission rebuild $2,000. Net value $4,000. So settlement value $2K.
Ex can't argue much. She can try to sell it but with a hurt gearbox how much realistically can she get for it? Or agree to put it on Ebay with a minimum reserve, if it doesn't sell see above.

I'd say it is worth $1.32 because they tax you on the value of the vehicle. I'm sure it is worth MUCH more than that, but for their purposes, I say it is worth $1.32. No use paying any more in taxes that you must.
