hot coil

Post by georgem »

Hi every one I am new to the world of fiat. The first thing is my background I am a very poor speller but a very good at electrical carpentry mechanical at one time certified master mechanic in the 80s. Can do about any thing well but expert at nothing. My 16 year old wanted some thing different than any one else for his firt car so when he was 14 i traded a cub cadet tractor for a 1972 fiat 850. He did all the body work him self put new clutch in painted him self at 15 years old with help from grandpap. He ran it in a field for allmost 2 years with little to no problems. This summer came the big day on the road it went all legal and every thing. The night mare begins . To make the story short we can not keep coil cool. Done so far 3 used coils with resistor 7.5 to 8.5 volts at plus terminal of coil 10 to 20 min.max red hot total shut down. New coil with built in resistor 15 to 20 mi max. This weekend put in old school accell super coil with resistor the big square yellow epoxy filled one from my mustang nova chevelle days 30 years ago 20 to 30 min. red hot . Over course of summer new points cap condenser wires plugs extra 0 gage grounds to body from battery and to engine. Set voltage regulator 13.2 volts a 2000rpm. Added 8 gauge wire from negitive of coil to points.Ignition power wire is 8 gauge direct from battery.Got bugs out of all lights dash gauges every thing workin as it should rebuilt carb new fuel pump . When car runs it screames like a mini stock car at 20 min. mark it gets tired and shuts off .Pu spade terminals on wiers to coil and with new coil on inner fender and super coil mounted to fan housing we can get out when it shuts off do a quick change to back up coil and go another 20 min.. I have over 100 hrs of reading this and other forms this summer tried every thin at lest 3 to 4 time check grounds statik timed at 0 tore down dizzy cleaned lubed checked bearings end play side play 3 sets points all like new not burnt new condensers becase of old addigage new is only new not good.Yes rotor buttons to. Parts from vicks international colberts fiat plus advance auto. Will take any sugestions.

Have 13.49 volts at positive post of coil. Used balast wit 3 oe type coils and with super coil same result hot coil in 20 min. Also tried coil with resiter built in with same results.

How hot is hot?? How hot should a coil get?? ( I don't know). If I read your post right, the coil gets so hot the car quits?? An you are sure it is the coil making the car shut down?? I assume it is points. Coil gets hot (how hot is too hot?) when points are closed and current is running thru coil. So you need to limit current, or limit the time the points are closed. To limit current, use a resistor. To limit time points close, open gap more.

Yes very simple basic system. I have tryed runing 2 resistors in positive feed to several differant coils cut back voltage feed to 7 volts set the points way beyond there proper range. Have tried accell super coil #140001 with resistor allwas used new points comdensor plugs . Yes current draw makes coils hot mine are getting so hot car shuts off. How do i know this car shuts off I jump out of car do quick 30 second change over to spare coil car runs another 15 to 20 min car shuts off repeat above . I put new insulater in dizzy checked double checked every thing I have read about and can remember from my early day of points and carbs. Yes I agree I have way to much current draw thru coils but how and where colud it be going. On another post with same problem owner was going to east cost from NY and said he stoped every couple hrs bought a new slushie and kept dipping his coil in it. Has any one had this problem tried every thing logical a dozen times and find some reason out of norm to be problem. Come on fiat fans challange me.I am about ready to give my 16 year old my red 1969 gt 350 mustang convertable. ( not )

After you turn the car over have you tested the voltage from the voltage regulator over a period of time. Given the new wires and other work done it has to be something basic. Too much current in or current has a hot path out.

Yes just checked again I have it set a little on the low side to try and copensate 13.4 at 2 grand. Could it be spiking at highway speed 4 to 5 grand I dont know. Alrernator was rebuilt but can you trust its old mechanical regulator.Just got home from work going out to tinker some more.

check out my post "4 month life span iggy coil"

i have a crane cam elect iggy module and two ballast resistors bringing down the juice to 10 vdc and go through coils quaterly...

try this i noticed to coil gets too hot to touch withing about 2 minutes with the plug wires removed the igniton pick up disconneted and just the key on with eng off. SOCAL MARK mentioned coils must be leaned over so oil will coat the entire windings --- tried that today didn't help.. next im gonna put a multimeter on amperage and put leads between the positive wire and the positive coil terminal and read the current draw-- give it a try

Sorry, but I have to ask this.

Is the coil mounted securely in the bracket?
Does it fit nice and snug? And is to connection of the bracket to the chassis clean and tight?
I seem to remember some time in the distant past being told that it is important for the coil to be properly mounted.

Yes My son who drives this car to school and back every day said yesterday morning he could barley keep it runing in morning but on his way home it ran like a new jet plane?????????????????????????????????????? Thats been the norm for this little go cart since the begining it runs like crazy good for 20 min than just wants to take a brake or just dosnt want to get up at all.Its like my boy( school days) wants to sleep in( weekends ) up at dawn and at granpaps working on cars or riding 4 whellers and comes home monday morining with grandma dead tired. This car is perfect match for him when it wants to play it wont quit if it needs to work it rolls over and goes back to sleep... Going to altoona this weekend to british car show mabe we can trade it for an mg . Dont tell any one were coming .
