Update: now high-20's with proper jetting. 10 hrs. of 4,000 RPM from Nashville to Baltimore yielded 25+

I've been getting an average of 27-28 mpg when I run on non-ethanol fuel at 75mph, if the odometer is accurate. Over 30mpg if I poke around at 55mph.

A small update, as I had the dual carbs cleaned and rebuilt (apparently they were quite full of varnish).

1st tank after the rebuild: 7.9 l/100km (30 USmpg)
2nd tank after the rebuild: 6.9 l/100km (34 USmpg)

Sounds amazing for twin weber dual throats. What octane rating are you using ? Leaded ?

I use a mix. It can live with 98 RON (with or without additive, to he honest I skip it now because the engine anyway has hardened seats), but even then it will ping on inclines under load at lower revs. It's very happy on 100 RON (e.g. Shell V-Power). Seems to make no difference on economy, whether I use 98 or 100, just on driveability. Typical RON available at the pump here is 95/98/100 (only Shell and BP).

As far as I remembers, the V-Power is beyond what you can buy at the pump in North America or most of Australia / New Zealand (but I could be wrong).

In the US, octane ratings in unleaded fuels can vary between 86 and 87 AKI (91-92 RON) for regular, through 89-90 AKI (94-95 RON) for mid-grade (European premium), up to 90-94 AKI (95-99 RON) for premium (European super).

(R+M)/2 AKI rating in US / Canada:

At 55 MPG with 93 Octane it is about 28. At 70-75 MGP with 93 Octane about 25-26. If I run anything less than 93 Octane and if i stray away from shell I will get a slight ping in the engine.

Redline in Switzerland must be doing something special. His 6.9Litres per 100Km equates to 40.76 miles per imperial gallon. I imagine that Switzerland is some distance above sea level too ?
I know different oil sourses have different callorific values ( does not have the same end user energy).
My best ever run over about 350km at night on easy running open roads, not going much over 100kph (62mph) was about 32-33mpg (imperial) or 8.5 Lper 100k which I thought was pretty good. Thats in a Fuel Injected 2000, starting at about 50', up to 700' & back to sea level.

The subsequent three tankfuls were 8.0, 7.2 and 7.3 l/100km. I myself didn't do anything, but it seems my mechanic is a wizard. :D The 8.0 tank was driving up to the mountains and back (500m - 1600m). The rest is at 500m, +/-

I don't know how I'm getting these numbers, I'm just enjoying the result. It must be that ultra-slippery Coupe body.

My '74 with 1800, Points and DMSA carb give about 22-24 combined. Just running round town and a little country drops to about 20 or so. No mods, 107K miles on original motor. Timing set about +5' I just put new points in, Dwell set to 55-56' (.017in) and timing set back to about 0' TDC. I want to try out this setting for best all around performance. I have never heard a ping, even below 2000 rpm. For awhile I ran about 12' BTDC timing and had great bottom end performance, but nothing after about 4000 (not that there really is now, I just don't rev it too hard).

Geez... You guys get some darn decent gas mileage. My '74 1800, 50k orig miles, shaved port & polished head, stock carb with larger jets... I only get 17mpg no matter how I drive. Although The car runs fantastic and has plenty of get up & go, but the gas mileage sucks!
