So I got home today and took a few more photos of the Spider just to show it off a little to those who are interested in it.
I jacked up the rear end, slid a jackstand underneath, and opened up the differential cover. Ah, yes, just as suspected. Half of the pinion gear is gone. It may be hard to see, but study the following photo. One side of the pinion has teeth, the other, none. That might explain the loud noises. Well, at least now I know what to fix.
Still, it's a pretty cool little car.

I've found one already. Making the call tomorrow. I believe this one is a 3.90, and I plan on going back with the same thing. Yes, it sucks, but because of this minor issue I got a great deal on the car. Man, I can't wait to get her on the road!

Not as bad as you may think..
It's a very simple remove/replace operation that's described in the shop manual, in case you have one handy.
I'm already on my second, but so far this last one has lasted me quite awhile-and my lead foot certainly hasn't gotten any lighter!
Good luck

Hmmmm, shop manual. Yeah, that might help. The previous owner included a Brooklands manual (I think that's what it is) in the deal. Sort of like a Chilton's manual. Is there a pdf version of the shop manual floating around?
