Tranny repair

Post by Divers »

I need to get my transmission repaired. Anyone have some input on where best to bring it? The car is in restoration, so I am not even going to need it back for a couple months...best case!
Outside of the fluid, is there anything special or should one of "chain" or local shop be ok? I know I should just learn to do this myself, but I have enough of a learning curve with everything else.

I did hear that the tranny wasn't that hard to fix.

I have a rebuilt tranny in my car from Jon Logan at Midwest 124. I've been very satisfied with his work. Others of our regular vendors also rebuild them, including Mark, our moderator, if I'm not mistaken.

Was it expensive? Shipping the tranny from Florida would probably kill the deal.

Shipping to California was around $80 and the price of the rebuilt tranny was around $1200. Jon gave me a list of the parts that went into the rebuild that came to $900, and his labor was $300. This was about three years ago.

I replaced my tranny last year. I was going to get mine through Midwest 124. They were backlogged but they didn't require a core because he said he has plenty. I ended up getting mine through vicks. Shipping wasn't that bad to Florida. The tranny's are small and fairly light. Tranny took a few days to arrive, The swap took a little longer because they forgot to send me the right seal for the bell housing. They overnight the part and I was done in a few hours. Drained my old tranny for a few days and wrapped it in plastic and mailed it back via UPS in the same box the new one came in. They refunded my core a few days later. The core was 250.00. Now my fiat sits in storage in Jacksonville while we are station here in japan.

I rebuilt mine last winter - replaced synchros, springs, sliders and shift forks along with all the bearings and seals. took a couple of weekends because I scrubbed everything in the degreaser before reassembley. Otherwise you could do it in a couple of days following the shop manual. not that hard really. You will need a gear puller to get a couple of pieces off, other wise just sockets and snap ring pliers

Search for BEEK on this forum. He is located in FL. He has my tranny right now. I supplied the parts and he did the work. Can't beat the price - I won't quote it here - but he will take care of you.

Good luck
