Howdy from Salt Lake City

Post by TripleDeuce »

What a great thing to find this forum! I own a '77 Spider 124 that my grandfather was the original owner of. I am 40, so he bought the car when I was 6. We had some great vacation drives in the car when I was a kid; through the Redwoods and Yosemite, up the west coast and through British Columbia, through Banff National Park, etc. He always promised he would give me the car someday, and receving it is bittersweet, as it means he is now too old to enjoy it anymore. It will be a family heirloom for a long time...

Fix it up and take him for a spin. He might have trouble getting in but once the top is down and he hears the exhaust he will grin and go down memory lane.

Welcome!

There's a few of us in here from SLC. ROOK1 is the ring-leader, you might say.... but Al pokes his head in once in awhile too.

What side of town are you on? (I'm out west)
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Welcome!

What Dan is referring to when he says 'Ring Leader" is the Utah Spider Association. I am the creator of the group, I cant say I am much of a leader at this time as my car is out of commission, but I try. Feel free to join the group. It free, it's not a club, no commitments or secret hand shakes. Just a group of spider owners, that share tips and get together to talk shop from time to time. Click on the link in my signature.

Maytag- I'm in the SW end of the valley. I work in WVC. Just got the invite from Chris and joined Utah Spider Association. I looked at a few messages posted there and the recent one from CO about emissions caught my eye. I may be passing on old news, but in Utah that last legislative session changed the definition of Vintage Vehicle to any vehicle 30 years old or older. If you register your Fiat as a Vintage Vehicle, you are exempt from both Emissions and Safety Inspection. I just brought my Fiat up from Florida; retitled and registered it here no problem. Problem is, alot of the DMV workers don't know the law, so you might locate Emissions and Safety laws at Utah.gov, print them (specificaly the "Exemptions" portions) and have them with you. Like I said, this may be old news to everyone, but there you go.
Happy to meet everyone!

This is news to me. And good news.
When I registered mine originally (2 yrs ago) they told me it had to be 40 yrs old to qualify as vintage. if it's 30 now, then we're good!
However, at the time, they also told me that a "vintage" registered vehicle could only be driven to shows and cruises and etc, and could not be used as regular transportation. How they would monitor that, I have no idea. what do you know about this?

News to me... :D I'm glad to hear it! I assume you were referring to my post over there. I'm reading through the Utah Code on vintage vehicle registration now trying to figure out what other restrictions they may have slapped on before I just go ahead and head on over to the DMV Monday morning.

41-21-1. Street rod and vintage vehicle defined.
(2) (a) "Vintage vehicle" means a motor vehicle that is 30 years old or older, from the current year, primarily a collector's item, and used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional transportation, and similar uses, but that is not used for general daily transportation.

41-6a-1642. Emissions inspection -- County program.
(3) The following vehicles are exempt from the provisions of this section:
(c) a vintage vehicle as defined in Section 41-21-1

41-1a-205. Safety inspection certificate required for renewal or registration of motor vehicle -- Exemptions.
(iii) a vintage vehicle as defined in Section 41-21-1.

-These are just quick copied exerpts from the full code. Refer to Utah State Code at Utah.gov for full versions. There is one more code that explains vintage vehicles exempt from emissions, but this one should do. Hope this helps.

It definitely helps.... but how will they monitor / police this part of it?

Good question. There are some mentions of penalties for non-compliance in there too. But how they'd enforce it, I'm not sure.
I decided to see if the modification to the main air correction jet would pass my emissions, and if so, just register regularly, seeing as I'd already paid for the testing and for the registration... and it did pass, so I won't be registering this way. It was tempting though.

Here's 2010's titling and registration stuff http://www.semaactionnetwork.com/images ... ete-UT.pdf
Look for the text "Vintage Vehicle" for applicable sections.

Here's the 2011 amendment http://le.utah.gov/~2011/bills/hbillint/hb0221s01.htm The bottom of it has the change from 40 to 30 years and date the bill took effect.

Also, here's the link to the code from the Utah State Legislature's website http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE41/htm/41_21_000100.htm starting on section 1 (use next/previous section links to move between sections)

That's great! I was counting the years until my fiat turned 40, but now I don't have to.
