Ignition light relay burning out

Post by 124spiderman »

The ignition light relay (located next to the voltage regulator in the engine bay) on my 73 Fiat keeps burning out. Anyone know what could be the cause of this? :?

Happened twice so far. First time Ign light came on. Checked charging system - ok.
Wired up according to wiring chart & manual, but doing so causes relay to get VERY hot. Also when wired up this way, light will glow when ignition switched on, but will not come back on if engine stalls (ie. no ignition light) :?

I think the issue is you are on the bottom side of the world. trying turning the solenoid upside down and see if that helps.
2 things come to mind. If you are using a used relay, the mechanics of the relay or the points can get worn and create alot of heat as well as resistance.
If you have extra lights on the same circuit, your relay may be undersized and you will need one with a bigger amp capacity.
One thing you could do is use an induction ammeter to see how much current draw is going thru the relay. see if it adds up to the lights you are running. Also look at the current going thru the switch side of the relay. it is possible your ground isnt right and you are drawing heavy current thru the switch side. Make sure the switch side has a good chassis ground.

The connection to the ignit. lamp was drawing way too much current due to a dodgy female-spade connector. Replaced the connection. Cleaned and tightened terminals and voila! sorted.
