I didn't do the points or the condensers. Guy before me did them... said he did them. Although, the points are clearly new. I just ordered this http://www.autoricambi.us/cgi/commerce. ... ey=IG0-001 from Auto Ricambi. Hoping this solves a problem or two. Seems as though this kit has pretty good reviews. Any thoughts?

the greatest improvement i made in my car was getting rid of points and condenser. Didnt use a conversion kit as i did a transplant with 79 motor.

I think ur tank vent is plugged, pull the fuel filler cap off and go for a drive, this may be the ticket. Good luck and merry christmas!

i agree its a good step forward

next test the ignition they go bad too
there a goast problem that comes and goes
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Christine,

First of all, as a fellow '74 owner, your car is gorgeous! Looking at the front of your car, it must be an early '74, that's a very rare 'small rectangle' grill!

Anyway, in '74, they had an odd safety circuit for the fuel pump. It's connected to the oil pressure light as a safety switch, so that in a crash the pump wouldn't keep pouring fuel onto the flames. Try getting your fuel pump a temporary new 12v source, and see if things are better.

You should also have two sets of points. One is 'dirty' for start up, the second set is for 'clean' running. This was an odd, early emissions requirement. It switches over to the second set of points after things warm up. International Auto Parts has a tech posting on how to convert to single points, I recommend this strongly! Also, condensers are troublesome & cheap. Better safe than sorry!

I also like having a glass fuel filter, so I can see if rust or debris is getting into the system. A good carb cleaning never hurts.

As others have said, an electronic conversion vs. points would be nice, but you should be able to get the car running strongly & reliably first.
