New owner in WA.

Post by 73WAspider »

Just recently bought a 1973 spider. Appears to have the original 1592cc motor. She currently has what appears to be a leaky valve cover but, she runs and drives. I look forward to fixing her up and slowly getting her perfect again.

Welcome. I'm south of you (Corvallis, OR). There are several Spider owners along I-5 and a club up in your area. This forum is a great place for ideas, and lots of technical support. Do share pictures of your car when you can -- we love pictures. Here is a few of my car.

I know that car -- I looked at it before I bought mine. As I recall it has good mechanics including a new clutch. Have fun and keep us updated on your progress.

71 - 73 are great years and from your pictures the car looks remarkably stock and original. Any idea of the true mileage? How is the interior?

I agree with Joe, that car is way down in the back. You might have bad shocks or springs. Something doesn't look right.

Also, check under the carpet and shock towers for bad rust.

Very nice, best of luck with it.

I spoke with the seller a few times about that car. Wasn't he advertising it as a 1975? I asked him twice if he could verify the date tag on the car...

Good buy! Congrats and I'm so glad you found the Forum too!

I think the shocks are shot. The car is very very solid. The only rust I found was a small amount in the driver footwell. Yeah it is definitely a 73... I was pretty shocked to see how much of the car appears to be stock. The interior is ok too. Showing its age but it is all there. The one biggest issue is that the dash is "wavy" and the drivers seat bottom has a tear at one of the seams. I was looking for something to fix up myself as a hobby. This is my first "resto" so we'll see how it goes.

Congrats on joining the Spider family. Looks like you got a great base for your first "resto". You made a good choice - these great cars are beautiful to look at, fun to drive, easy to work on and have very strong vendor support.
Just a couple friendly warnings though...they can be addictive...notice how many of us on here have (or have had) more than one! You can also get carried away pretty easily with the restoration. Lots of us have gotten obsessed with making our Spiders "perfect" and spent WAY more money on our cars than they will ever be worth.
