Update. I got a 77 spider a year and a half ago. Spent most of that time getting the mechanicals up to par. Runs and drives great. It still has some minor issues( clock not working, temperature gauge spiking ever once and a while, oil pressure gauge off and right hand signal switch engages hazards). But all in all minus the electricals it's runs great. It's in the paint shop getting new paint then I'll be installing the interior. I'll be installing the abarth bumpers, with some smoke gray centers and chrome lip 15x7 rims all the way around. Color will be the factory red that came on it with black interior.
I'm not doing an engine rebuild now because it runs so good as is. I plan on driving it a bit then rebuilding it in a few years.
About the electrical problems. Would bad grounds make the gauges act weird like that? The wiring harness has been mangled badly in the past and I suspect grounding issues. Also is there a good machine shop to bring this block to? I live between Atlanta and columbus ga. The local ones really don't want to fool with it. Thanks for all your good info on this site
