Thought I would share a funny story and a cautionary tale. So as some of you know I had a battery issue recently http://wwwe.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopi ... =6&t=17806
so I found out while ratcheting my new battery to the positive clamp that when my rachet slipped it is the exact same length as the distance between the positive and negative terminals. Luckily light travels faster than sound and I jumped back when I the sparks. As well the battery and electrical seems completely unaffected

Re: And sparks will fly
A little black tape on the end of that rachet will keep that from happening... LOL ASK ME HOW I KNOW!! the same applies to the 10mm wrench I keep on my Harley (only metric wrench due to all batteries being made overseas I guess), and why the end of it is wrapped in black tape as well.....

I welded my titanium wedding band to a wrench doing that... and got a minor burn while I was at it.

Scared the crap out of me. Sparks in the trunk right beside the gas tank etc. It really did take me by surprise. Lesson learned

At least you learned from the first hit, Jay.
I did it twice....
.... and have some deep scorch marks on my black chrome Stanley ratchet...
... and some smoking hand hair.

I did it twice....[quote]
Speaking of twice, imagine, long long ago, when I was 17, with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever of what I was doing (that hasn't changed much), and swapping an inline 6 and manual tranny with a V8 and automatic in a 66 Chevy Pickup I bought for $200...
Sitting on the ground, using a plasma torch to cut off the rivets holding the tranny frame mount rail to relocate it, I'm working away, not thinking about the pair of gas lines running down the inside of the frame right next to where I'm applying excess heat. I watched in awe and disbelief as a flame literally appeard out of nowhere on the outer skin of the tubes, following it as it came down to the ends that just happen to be right at eye level with me and POOOF!! No more eyebrows...
Thought I got smart, so I put on a pair of goggles............... needless to say........... POOOF!! I had a receeding hairline as well....
It was then I realized I might have been doing it wrong....

Re: And sparks will fly
guess who is buying a fire extinguisher as part of my trunk kit ? I feel we are given these second chances at life so that we can educate others and lower the natural selection process lol

Re: And sparks will fly
Definitely wrap the other end of your 10 mm in electrical tape... the same sparks happen when you inadvertently touch the top of the truck while tightening or loosening the positive terminal.

Re: And sparks will fly
Good rule of thumb is to always pull the neg terminal first & install it last, that removes that chance of shorting to the body when working with positive side of things. & yes I know this first hand.
