Stupide question!!!
Stupide question!!!
It´s a stupid question, but I have no one else to ask...
If I want 10 degree advance at TDC how do I do it?
- Should I align the cams on the TDC marks, then the crankshaft on the 10 Degree advance mark and finally put the timing belt on?
- Or, should I put everything on the 0 degree advance mark and then use my strobe light to get 10 degree advance as I rotate my dizzy.
Thanks

Rotate the distributor and check with the timing light.

p.s. no such thing as a stupid question....................only stupid people The fact that you asked a question to gain knowledge shows you are not one of them

Re: Stupide question!!!
To answer the question...
The timing marks on the cams/crank need to be lined up as per the manual. Do not "advance" them 10 deg.
With engine running and timing light on #1 or #4, shine strobe down at crankshart marks and rotate dist till you get to 10 deg.

Re: Stupide question!!!
good trick is to put a spot of bright paint (yellow or white) on the pulley mark so you can easily see it while timing.
Re: Stupide question!!!
Thanks all for your answer
Can you do that with the distributorless system from Mark. I mean can I rotate it to get the 10 degree TDC that I´m suppose to put to install the system???
I´m all confused now.

Also make sure the idle is set at +/- 750 rpm when you set the timing.

Re: Stupide question!!!
Yes, you can rotate the computronix distributor that Mark sells. I had the same question a couple weeks ago. Manually set your engine to about 12 BTDC then with the car idling between 800 to 900 rpm use your timing light to fine tune the timing by rotating the distributor in small increments until your timing light shows your engine to be right at 12 BTDC. Rotate a little, then check to see what that did to your timing. Rotate a little and check again.
My question to you is, can you see your timing marks with your fan installed? I couldn't see mine and had to take the fan out while setting the timing. This doesn't seem right to me though.

Re: Stupide question!!!
Don't quote me on the rpms... that might be high, I can't remember exactly what I was told. However I do know that FI and carb models require slightly different rpm ranges to set the timing correctly.

Re: Stupide question!!!
I have the Computronix distributor in my 1975 124 and an EMPI 32/36 DFEV carb (5 speed tranny). Idle is supposed to be between 850 and 900 rpm. Then I turn the distributor to achieve 12 degrees BTDC timing.

Re: Stupide question!!!
Thanks everybody.
Joelittel by manually setting 12BTDC you mean setting the cranckshaft on the 12 degree mark statically... then put the distributor in place ...then start the engine to check the 900 RPM ...then check the 12 BTDC with the light by rotating the computronix?
So I guess it´s just like a normal dizzy?
Did I get it right? I sound so dum...
