My tank always measured completely full, so I bought a new sending unit, but it didn't help anything. So I took out the new unit and attached a ground wire to it, and with the key on I moved the float lever up and down. I see that my gauge reads totally full when the lever is in the up position, but it only just goes down to under the 4/4 mark when it's all the way down.
Is there a solution for this?
Fuel gauge is off
Re: Fuel gauge is off
The only thing I can think it could be is that when I bought the car (a '79) I switched the gauge with one from a '74.
It's always read full, so I've always figured it was just the sending unit.
Would it make a difference which year the gauge is? I couldn't see how...It hooked right up just the same...

It does not matter what year the gauge is from. Do you have your original one?
Gauges rarely go bad, but it could happen.
At first I thought maybe the wires are reversed, but then it would do the opposite, show full when the float is all the way down.

Well, it turns out it was the gauge after all. I put a new one in and it works perfectly.
So this is one case of a bad fuel gauge.
