Hello from NW Georgia

Post by injunjoe535 »

Just doing the obligatory 1st post. My name is Joe, I live in NW Georgia and just acquired a '77 124 spider. It's been sitting for 12 years but It started for me last week on starting fluid. Just got the gas tank out today for cleaning, then its brake rebuilding time and new tires of course. Hope to have it on the road in a month or so. I'll include a picture if I can figure out how to attach it directly to the post.
I've been lurking on this site for about a week, looks like lots of good people helping out those in need. Hopefully I can help out here and there as well.

Welcome aboard!

This is a procedure that I have been developing for a little while on how to post pictures here in the Forum. Hope it is useful, and comments are always welcome.

HOW TO POST PICTURES IN FIATSPIDER.COM

Well that picture-posting thing sure is confusing. Took me forever to figure it out. Here is what I do:

First, you must post your pictures on photobucket.com or one of the similar competing websites. You can't post pics directly from your computer. So set up a free account there first. The instructions here reference photobucket.com.

Then in your FS.com post, look for the "Img" box at the top of the post, #9 from the left in the row of command icons.

Put the cursor where you want the pic to appear in the post (leave a few spaces after text is a good idea) and click the "Img" button/icon above.

Then go to the photobucket.com site (or competitor) and find your pic. Hover the cursor over the pic and a drop down menu will appear. Then click the "Direct Link" or similar button. In Photobucket, it will respond with a "copied" indication.

Go back to your FS.com post and make sure the cursor is EXACTLY in between the 2 Img boxes: then right click and hit "paste" and the web link for the pic will show up in between the 2 img boxes. DON'T hit the IMG button a second time. MOVE your cursor out of the IMG info you just created before you hit enter.

Now when you post the post, the pic will be there!

Remember that if you delete the photobucket "master" pic, it will no longer appear in the posting here on FS.com

Also: there is a size limit to the pictures that can be displayed here, I think it is 750 pixels in width, someone correct me if I am wrong. So you may need to resize (typically downsize) the pics so that they fit properly and all of the pic is displayed and not cropped. What I do is really simple: I email the original picture to myself within AOL. AOL will automatically prompt you to see if you want the picture "optimized". Say "yes" and send this new pic to yourself. I then save it with a "small" addendum to the picture name and put this optimized picture up on photobucket. It works every single time like a charm.

Thanks guys for the welcome.

@RRoller: Thanks for the advice. I was hoping for a more direct way to just attach a picture straight to a post. But if that's the only way I'll give it a try soon. I tried to put a picture of my car in my avatar but no matter how small I specified the pixel amount it always came back as "too big". Guess I'll go without for now.

@ Ga.spider: I've noticed a lot of north Ga folks on here for the past few weeks I was lurking. I'm taking that as a good sign. :D

welcome to the best site on the web! i live just 20 or so miles up the road from you in Ringgold. if you get stuck or frustrared just give a holler, i will try to help. i could drive mine down if you need one to look at to compare to see if yours missing anything. i just need to get my valve adjustment done first to smooth it out!

Steve thanks for the offer, I may have to take you up on it eventually just to see how much progress I have in front of me. This one isn't that bad considering its sat for 12 years. Gas tank cleaning will begin soon and then I'll see if its getting fuel to the carbs. If it starts up and runs then, I'll change the fluids and start on the brakes.
Unfortunate my wife lost her job last week and as a result this car was immediately put on the back burner until we get her back into the workforce. I'll continue with stuff that doesn't cost much money to do. Hopefully this will be very temporary.

I had a 70 MGBGT.It was the best sports car I had owned, until I got the Fiat.So much better than the MGB convertible.
The Spider looks pretty solid.I had a red 76 that the paint was faded like yours.I used Meguiars Ultimate Compound and brought it back to a really good shine.Great product..not as aggresive as rubbing compound.Good luck with the car and the wifes job search!!

Thanks for the well wishes Craig, greatly appreciated. Mine is indeed a 70 GT, complete with original split rear bumpers. I got it last October and when I got it home and really got into it I realized its a long term project. It's sat since 1989 and the PO took the oil pan off due to a rod knocking, then parked it in a field without replacing the pan. Floorboards are gone, engine was seized, needs lots of love, a 5 year project easy. That's what prompted me to look for something I could get on the road quicker. I'll attach a picture here of what it looked like when I got it, you'll instantly see that I'm an eternal optimist. :D
This Spider is indeed in pretty good shape, the PO had it parked in a shed. The only big rust spot is on the DS rear fender, visible in the picture. I had an 850 Spider once, bought it out of a junk yard. Got it home and realized why it was there to begin with........Ahh the exuberance of youth. I'm still hankering for an X/19 though.

Hi Joe! My name is Joe, too... I just joined the forum yesterday. I don't own a Spider yet.... I am looking at a '75 tomorrow, and looking at a '77 on Monday. Both red. :) Hopefully one of them will be "the one."

I wish you all the best with your new project.... and will look forward to watching your progress. Keep us posted!

hey joe from PA. look in some of the threads pertaining to new owners and you will find posts that will help you look for things that will be deal breakers when buying or at least help you bid down the price to where you wont get in over your head. be careful though, a fiat is like finally getting that girl back in highschool that was just a bit out of your league! but you will always love and admire her! LOL
