Replacement alternators for 1979
I read elsewhere that the rebuilt ones from Autozone are crap. True? Only $60...
I found these on Rockauto, rebuilt by Delco. Prices are very good. Opinions? I don't have AC, but any of these should fit, right?

Thanks!

Several years ago (about 5 maybe) I got a remanufactured (not rebuilt) Bosche 65 amp unit from Advance Auto Parts and it came with a "lifetime" warranty. I had to give them my old unit as well.

My bad George, they are listed as remanufactured, bot rebuilt. I was not aware there was really a difference.
So how has your alternator held up?

Rebuilt units have just the worn out/bad parts replaced, remanufactured units have all new components installed. After five years, it's food but the original lasted 25 years - we'll see.ScoopMan wrote:My bad George, they are listed as remanufactured, bot rebuilt. I was not aware there was really a difference.

Nice, but $200 is more than my poor dentmobile deserves. I might think differently if I had a nice one. Mine has served as a mice condo for about a year and a half, until this past weekend when I began my efforts to bring the old girl back to life. I am hoping to get her back on the road in a semi-reliable state while there is a little summer left.

You could always assume the position of "slum lord" and charge the mice rent then have it paid off in no time

Too bad, I already evicted them with an electric leaf blower. One had set up a sweet crib for himself in the glovebox, it was full of weird fluffy stuff, probably from the blanket that I found half eaten in the trunk....4uall wrote:You could always assume the position of "slum lord" and charge the mice rent then have it paid off in no time

Has anyone had experience with NAPA remanufactured alternators?

Is there any reason a standard American alternator found in a scrapyard wouldn't work? Assuming you install the stock pulley on the Am. alternator?

I read somewhere on here that a Ford alternator fits our cars...?blurple124 wrote:Is there any reason a standard American alternator found in a scrapyard wouldn't work? Assuming you install the stock pulley on the Am. alternator?
Re: Replacement alternators for 1979
I tried to purchase the 65 amp Napa Alternator last week. Today I got an email that said they do not have the alternator and cannot get it. I don't know if this means they will not ever be able to get it or its a temporarily unavailable part.ScoopMan wrote:Has anyone had experience with NAPA remanufactured alternators?

Re: Replacement alternators for 1979
I have said this before. I had mine repaired at a local alternator/starter shop 9 years ago. The cost then was $65 and that included a new voltage regulator.
I try and support local businesses when I can. In this case I think a local repair is the most sensible approach unless you are stepping up to a high amperage alternator.

Tis a simple alternator, and easy to change, if money is an issue, just buy one from NAPA or Autozone or whoever, it will likely work. Get er one.
