Soon to own 1969 124

Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy what looks like a solid 1969 Fiat Spider next week. Hasn't been run in six years but was fully functional when the PO stopped driving it. I would like to connect with other 1438 AS owners and if anyone has advice on what I should do before attempting to start the car, it will be most welcome.

Hello and welcome. There are a few 1438 owners here so you've come to the right place. I would change all the fluids and drain and purge all the old gas out before I ever tried to start it. Then after it was running I would start planning on changing the timing belt ASAP. If its like mine when I brought it home, all the rubber components will need to be replaced. Just inspect it thoroughly. After its on the road these things will reveal themselves. Good luck with your new ride. It will be worth it in for just the pleasure you will get out of it. Welcome! Indeed, there are a few of us here loving on our little 1438s. Check out some of the restoration threads.
Along with changing all the fluids, including blowing out the gas lines, I would consider replacing the ignition components; coil, wireset, plugs, points, rotor, all of which can be done pretty cheaply. And be prepared to replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt. They are known to start leaking after sitting for prolonged periods. Meanwhile, while contemplating all this and making your list, post pictures!! We love to see everyone's cars.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and advice! I will post "before" pictures on the restoration page when I have the car. Though I don't plan a complete restoration at this point, I guess it qualifies since it's non-op.

Mine will not be a "restore" either, but rather a renovation/renewal, which I think most of them are. I considered a full restore back to completely original, but I'm not interested in having a "trailer queen." I intend to drive my cars often. Besides, as great as the design is, there are always a few areas for improvement, like upgrading to a larger alternator, putting in relays for the lighting, customizing the dash a bit, etc.

So, while there are threads for specific projects in certain areas, I like seeing these early cars in the restoration thread, even if it's just the story of bringing 'em back to life after a long sleep. Can't wait to see yours!
