New 1981 Spider owner here!

Post by RCspider »

Hello everyone! A month ago I fell head over heels with a 1981 Spider I saw for sale and quickly dove into it. I got it for $1200 and now put over $800 dollars to get it moving. I love this car and I wish to contine restoring it, but I don't know where to start. So I guess thats why I'm here, to disscuss and hopefully get my Spider in prime shape with help from you guys. Its awesome to say I'm a proud Spider owner.

Thanks, RCspider

Welcome RC. Got mine in the spring and didn't know jack about fixing cars, and with the good folks here have been encouraged to do much. Where are you located? Good luck - Chuck.

Well thats good to here! I'm located in Southern Californa, Orange County to be exact. Hoping to meet a local Spider owner and take a good look at his or her Spider. Since mine is missing a couple of things no doubt about it.

Just start at the beginning. I am in the same boat as you brother. I spent almost 800 on parts and stuff just for the engine and fuel lines and stuff. I paid 1500 for mine and had to get a trailer in Paris Tx. and go to Durant OK to get the car and bring it back to New Orleans, La. That was a 14 hr drive round trip. Don't get discouraged. Just hit it one thing at a time. I would suggest starting at the fuel tank then the pump and filter. Then the fuel lines. Check my post on tools and parts source for the links to the SS fuel line and stuff. Take everything off the front end of the engine and clean and paint it. if it moves grease it if not then paint it red or yellow or whatever color you fancy. The fuel line was torn in 2 places. Work your way forward. systematically go through every thing. I think we don't need the charcoal filter unless you live in Cali. Mine was augmented and I don't even think there is a return line for it. Who knows. I haven't pulled the carpet to see if the line is there. Check my facebook page to look at my progress. my name is eric hymel. do a friend search and add me as a friend. I will add you and you can look at my progress under fiat restoration. I can send you copies of every manual I could find for download if you send me an email address. Just say manuals in the subject line. (ehymel@netzero.net) Good Luck!

Welcome! I too have an 81 that was a turbo, it was removed but I still have the parts. Got it this spring from the original owner, in very good condition, no rust and a very good interior, but I did pay $3K for it.

Yes, please post pics.

Good luck!

Amazing how low priced these fine little cars can be. Anything under $5K for a nice vintage sports car is a steal if we compare the costs to other vintage cars. (Just don't tell too many people or speak too loudly in public, don't want the secret to get out) 8)

Under $5K RR, until you start counting the amount of time and money we put into them. :)

But the reward is priceless!

That is right! But take a look on craigslist or ebay at what $15K gets you in a crappy British ragtop. It is amazing the difference. These cars are the hidden gem of the motorsports world! (so speak in whispers until they pass).
