Hi all, first time Spider owner.
Hi all, first time Spider owner.
Hey, everyone. First time on this site. Name's Joe, owned nothing but Fiats for the past 3 years. Daily Driver's my 79 X1/9, and I have 3 "projects" on the side. Have an 81 Lancia Beta Coupe, a 73 128 sedan long-term project car, and the car that brough me to this site, "Marko," my 79 124 Spider. Picked up this Spider for $400, it was sitting in an elderly gentleman's yard untouched for a year. Brought over a battery, poured a little gas down the carb, fires right up, no smoke, bottom end noise, nothing. First drive (after I bought the car,) it pulls hard to the right, and there's a slight "clunk" when the wheel's turned heavily in one direction, so I'm assuming the pitman arm needs replacing. Fuel system is nasty, already pulled the tank, and it's being cleaned as I type. Already rebuilt the carburettor (the dreaded 28/32 ADHA) and performed a little tune up. Very happy for what I paid for it Gearbox has a bad third gear, and it pops out of fourth when I lift off the throttle, going to check/replace the gear oil before I jump to assumptions that the box is "bad," heard many stories on these boards of similar things happening then fixing themselves with a gear oil change. Sorry to ramble, figured I'd introduce meself whilst I had internet access. Looking forward to using this site, thanks all for reading - JG

Re: Hi all, first time Spider owner.
Welcome Joe, check that front end out quick smart, especially the ball joints.
Crunchy 3 gear, probably syncro ring, mines been a bit shagged out for years but I manage to work around it, mind you my Spider only gets out a handful of times a year otherwise it would be box out and fix.
Popping out of 4th, sounds silly but make sure the centre console is in its correct position, probably not the issue but I have seen this happen before.
Oh and before I go, get a little pic up of that "long term project", I'm a forum deprived 128 nutter over here .

I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Thanks for the replies! Will be getting pics up shortly of the whole FIAT (and Lancia) gang haha. Looking forward to using this site, learning, and hrowing my 2 cents in whenever I get the chance! Looking at an 84 Alfa Romeo GTV-6 here in the next couple of days, as well.. god help me! lol

Welcome brother. I just got a 1981 spider 2000. Slowly redoing everything. 1st step is to get the engine going. after that... It's all one piece at a time.
