Lets try to diagnose the problem before looking for someone to rebuild. Can you locate where the knocking is coming from?

Hello. I think the sound is on top of engine. When I started car yesterday it sounded like a belt was shreading so I cut it off checked everything. When I restarted the motor it was knocking. I have not checked timing yet. It is a 76 spider 1800. Thanks

Hey guys: Whay do you think: Aux shaft? Small belt slip allowing shaft to touch?

Hello. The motor turns freely but will not make a complete rotation in either direction. Ok the crankshaft pulley is straight up aux pully at 1 o clock but the cam shafts are off about quarter turn. I was moving car to my shop to replace timing belt. Any advice.

Sounds like Aux Shaft out of position to me. I had the same symptom when I forgot to align the pulley properly last time (I forgot).

When rotating by hand I could get almost 360 and then "thunk". After puzzling for a min it dawned on me.

I had a aux shaft slightly off on a belt replacement. It sounded like little guys with hammers inside the motor.Non interference motor,no damage. If it was fine before, you need to look back on the last thing you did.Thats where the issue usually found.Has the car been sitting up for a while? I would hold off deciding ona rebuild and investigate a little more.

Yes it was sitting for awhile. I had just done few minor things to make it run. It was running smooth with very little engine noise. I had driven it 15/20 miles and parked it. Went out next day to take to shop to replace timing belt and seals. Went to start made funny noise and then knocking noise. Have not had time to replace belt to see about valves.

Does sound like the timing belt slipped a few teeth when you started it up after the sit, and the aux shaft is hitting now.

I agree.Is that year motor a non-interference like the 2000?

Pulled front spark plug out. There was a valve laying in cylinder. So I pulled head off and everything looked good except where the valve had knocked hole in piston. I have a 79 spider with a good engine will the motors interchange. The number on the head of 76 is 4277590. 132ab 9a and the head number on 79 is 4439644. 132ac2c. Thanks.casey
