Hi am new to forum. Looking forward to sharing with owners with similiar interests. Have a 79 2000. Getting ready to upgrade intake manifold and upgrade carb. while all that is apart decide to add headlight relays. Pulled the alternator, and was suprised to see that it is a 55 amp Marelli. According to the workshop ,manuel 75 and 76 used Marelli, 77-80 Bosch, and 81 on a 65 amp Bosch. Have little or no knowledge of the cars previous life, however appears to be fairly stock. My question is could this be original equipment and does anyone know of the reputation of the Marelli? Am going to have it bench tested and may need to decide between rebuild and replace. have to do the most cost effective solution to preserve marital bliss. Thanks for the input.

Re: Alternators
Hello & welcome to the best place on earth
Jim I had an original 65amp Bosh on mine and had no issues however, I had read that with some of our current demands (ie. stereos, usb ports, cell phone adapters etc) that an upgrade could not hurt. My wife was kind enough to get me a Christmas present and have been happy ever since.
Those that know more will chime in.

One of the best investments I've made is a 95A alternator from Mark. (http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/products.html)
I put one on Project Basketcase some time ago, and have just bought another one for the yet-to-be-christened one.
As the man says: "This will cure your charging system troubles, make your windshield wipers work faster, make the power windows run quicker and make your lights brighter. Very necessary if you've added additional lighting or a sound system to your Spider. Easy installation, only requires a one wire connection."
... I haven't tested the "will" at the front of this yet however, everything does seem to improve!
