steering boxes lhd and rhd

Post by jamesrobert »

hey guys i'm currently living in Australia and my spider is right hand drive. I need to replace my steering box however finding a rhd one is almost impossible. would it be possible to trade all the internal components from a left hand drive steering box into the case of my rhd one and end up with an as new right hand drive steering box ???

i bought a new lhd steering box ( made a bit of a mistake) and it cost 250$ so im going to see if i can use the internal components and just switch them. i will post the results when i do it but it might be a while. hopefully this will be a cheaper option for all those rhd fiat spiders.

Hi James, don't waste your time pulling the LHD sterring box apart.
The worm drive on the input shaft and output shaft turn in opposite directions between a RHD and LHD.

The item that Divace has posted from gumtree is for a RHD, that I can confirm.

Spiders have the two uni joints in the centre section of the steering column so you will need the long shaft steering box.
A 124 sedan steering box in RHD will not fit as they are a short shaft.

Flick me a PM and I will give you some names and details of some people I know that might just have a decent RHD coupe steering box they can part with.

If I may ask, what's the problem with the current steering box in the car?
