Source for a New Top

Post by dsnyder »

I parked my 1978 Fiat near the house and a cat jumped off the roof and tore through the top... argggh!

Any suggestions and a good source for a new top?

I will be installing it myself as I installed the now torn one about 4 years ago. My source is out of business so I need a new one.

My only suggestion - don't park near a hot tin roof? Sorry Dave, couldn't resist.

Literary humor... proof that Fiat drivers are smarter than the average Ford owner.

Must of been one hell of a cat or the top was ready to be replaced already. I hope poor cat is ok

I posted this in the thread in Restoration as well, but here it is again for additional exposure or input.

I'm in the same position - needing a new top for a 1979 Spider (except mine was hail, not a cat). There's a lot of discussion about where to order from - online distributors/manufacturers, eBay, etc. But my big question is which types should I be looking at? Material is the biggest factor; is canvas worth the extra? What is the build quality difference, longevity, wear, effects of exposure to sunlight, etc.

I plan to drive it mostly during the warmer months, so I'd hope to drive primarily with the top down. However, during the winter, I don't have a garage to store it in (maybe I can work one out) but I have a car cover for it. I'm looking to get the most value for money, it's not necessarily for a show piece.

To be honest, I'm leaning towards canvas, but only because I feel the material's quality will be longer lasting, but I'm wanting to know if that assumption is true and/or worth it.
