How do you seal exhaust joints?

Post by burgandy81 »

Hi all,

Working through my long list of winter maintenance and will have a look at the exhaust soon.

I have an 81 with stock replacement exhaust (stock dimensions and style but aftermarket pieces).

The slip joint from the resonator to the muffler has always leaked on my car. I have tightened the clamp to point where I feel I will crush the pipe soon. Putty and paste do not seem to last long.

I can hear the leak which is annoying and I can smell the exhaust when sitting in traffic. Looking forward to fixing this one.

Any suggestions?
So Cal Mark

use an expander to properly resize the inside pipe

expanders that you use a socket on are available for not much money. Or go to a muffler shop and ask them to resize it for you

I prefer the stainless band type if its ever to be taken apart or the guillotine type if you want a crush clamp. You can see the styles here:

Thanks All,

I went for a different clamp style and it seems to be working on my garage test.

Cheers,
