I've been unable to remove the bolt holding the alternator to the mounting bracket (lower bolt). It won't budge. Had no problem removing the pivot (tensioner) bolt. Here's a photo of the bolt from the back of the alternator. The bolt is 19mm and I used a socket on a 25 inch breaker bar to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions for removing this bolt?

Tap on the bolt with a small hammer when it is soaked in penetrating oil, it helps get it down into the threads.

Re: Alternator Removal '81 FI
You are not doing anything wrong. That bolt is just rusted in there real tight. As stated above penitrataing oil and a hammer
plus a lot of patience. Just keep working with it some today some tomarrow ect and you will get there. If you have a zip
gun(air chisel) they are a big help with something like this. If the radiator is out then a inpact gun also is helpful. Just take
enough time not to break anything. For now some fluids would likely be in order.

Re: Alternator Removal '81 FI
I was going to upgrade my 81 to the 95 amp alternator when I ran into that exact problem. I posted for some help and got some suggestions.

I did some searching and found this:
http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... nator+bolt
Watching an alternator and mounting bracket get torn apart scared me enough that I bolted the alternator back on and never switched it out. I ended up using the 95 amp alternator on a different car.
Hope yours is less locked up than mine was.

Re: Alternator Removal '81 FI
After about a half can of penetrating oil and almost a month of on and off work I finally got the bolt to back out far enough so that I could tap it out with a trim removal tool and hammer. Phew!
Re: Alternator Removal '81 FI
hopefully you will coat that bolt with anti-seize before it goes back in
