John - Uno Turbo 1.6 mk2 / Portugal

Post by JohnS »

Hello!

I joined this forum in the hopes of finding someone that might be able to to give me some more help on the topic of importing a car to Canada / Ontario. I am currently living in Portugal, but i will emigrate in the near future to the place named a few words back. The car has a huge amount of cash spent in mods and parts and i would love to bring it with me. The objective is to use it for track days, drags and the occasional drive on Sunday afternoon. Pretty much everything can be bought on ebay these days and shipped worldwide so the parts wouldn't be a problem.

Also, cars older than 15 years old can be imported in the majority of the situations. Legalizing the car though is a totally different situation and i am concerned that the performance mods i have made to the vehicle will cause problems amongst the authorities. To give a quick hint, the car has:

Stroked engine from 1.4 to 1.6, with bigger turbo, full alloy intercooler, 19 row oil cooler, bigger injectors, stainless steel intake pipes, header blanket, straight through exhaust pipe with no back or middle box, no cat and also koni shock absorbers, sparco springs and 15 inch instead of 13 inch wheels. (and much more)

I have seen online some lancia delta's hf integrale for sale on Ontario, also from 1992 so it adds up to the idea of a successful import.

Any help would be gladly appreciated and yes, i will be calling transport canada and the borders agency to ask for more information.

I am from Canada and don't think you will have to much trouble bringing hour car here even though I am in Vancouver most situations like this are similar from Provences. I regularly see right hand drive cars from Japan as well there is a German car delarship that imports Mercedes all the time, also I am sure if you go to the immagration Canada website there would be detailed info and procedures.

Once I brought my fIat out of storage I had it shipped to another province and to register the car I had to first pay the provinceal taxe even though I had owned the car for 20 years.

Yes.. the age is ok; it's from 1992. What concerns me are the mods the car has... co2 emissions, noise, ground clearance, etc.. i would like to have more details on the customs procedures regarding this when they check your car...
Thank you. I've read all the sections regarding importation before. :) I will leave some photos of the car, which i hope it helps.

Like anything comming into Canada the customs agent can do what ever they like to your vehicle that includes dismantle and ask for receipts of ownership.
as far as registering and insuring the vehicle that would be up to the province you are moving to, they are two different entities as far as I know.
Good luck.

Ps. Nice fiat

Hi. Hope you can get your car into Canada.
I see on Craigs List on occasion, later 90's Alfa's for sale..."imported from Italy"
Perhaps try Andy's Spiders in Toronto
http://www.andyspiders.com/
He might be able to give you some insight.
Another fellow I see advertising Fiats and Alfa's Mario Ricambi
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/cto/3630620103.html

In Vancouver, Geo Clemente has several later Alfa's for sale, again he might give someinsight.
http://www.clementeeuropeanmotorsautosport.com/contacts
Good luck.
I'd let the car in but there are european cars prohibited, some because of the anchor points for rear kids seats.
Canada customs has a list of prohibited cars on their website. Might take some hunting though, their logic might not be the same as ours.

Every link and piece of information that i find, leads me to the same information. Vehicles older than 15 years old outside of the US are ok. Everything is ok with the shell, so it doesn't count as a trike, kit car, etc. I do need specific info on "tuning parts?" or "souped up cars" which is the category my car seems to fit in. Thank you for providing those numbers. I am unsure those sellers will want to give me a helping hand with more info, but i shall try.

I would love so much to import it to Canada and have the only UT in there
