reverse lights on all the time
my reverse lights are on all the time but in neutral. if car is in neutral they are off ????? any hints !
Re: reverse lights on all the time
That could be! because I have a big oil leak on my trans! The oil leak could make this happen???
If it warms up this weekend I will be cleaning the trans. so then I can check that to!
Thank you Mark!

Re: reverse lights on all the time
the wires to the backup light switch are very close to the coupler. If they aren't secured properly they can get damaged. Of course soaking them in oil can cause them to deteriorate
Re: reverse lights on all the time
If they go off when in neutral not likely shorted wires. I would just drive around backwards all the time, then they will be fine.

hey so besides (Keith's) majicwrench's comment about driving backwards!
is the a reason why this lights are always on with the exception when in neutral???
I cleaned off all oil from both switches on the trans!

The reverse switch is on the back end of the transmission. It sounds like your reverse light is connected to the switch on the top of the transmission in front of the shift housing. I think that is an emission switch of some kind that isn't used on all years. I've heard that switch is on when in any gear and off when in neutral. There is another switch that may be on the right side of your transmission that is also for emissions.

Re: reverse lights on all the time
I recently had this same problem on my 78 where the reverse lights were on in any gear except neutral. I learned that I had accidentally connected the reverse switch to an emissions switch connection and that is what had caused the problem.I switched the wires and the problem was solved.

I guess that's what happens when one decides to install a transmission at 3 o'clock in the morning.
