Salutations!

Post by Nick »

Hello everyone. I am now the proud owner of a 1979 Spider 2000. Just got it today, can't remember the last time I was this excited. The previous owner told me about this website, he said many good things about you all and I decided it couldn't hurt to check it out.

I'm 17 years old (I know many of you may have a heart attack hearing that, I apologize) and I live in Upstate New York, in a town called Naples (how fitting!). This is my second car, I have previously owned a 1994 Honda Civic, which is still intact in my driveway as we speak. My father bought this car for me, we've always wanted to own something like this, and it is going to make a great father/son project restoring it. My dad used to own an MGB and a Triumph TR7, similar to this of course, so he's really excited about having it.

I want to let you all know that I am aware of how amazing this car is, I fell in love even when I saw a small low-resolution picture on the website posting it for sale, and of course its far better in person. I am a very cautious person, not your standard teenager, and I will be extremely careful when driving this car. I'm actually a pretty big nerd, so nobody has to worry about me going to parties or anything like that. I also NEVER plan on "tricking it out", I'm going to keep it as Fiat-like as possible, and not do anything radical at all. The previous owner wished to restore it to its original condition entirely, I may add parts from different years if I like them better, but I will be entirely tasteful about it.

Now on to what you all want to know, the car. I have a couple pictures I took right before it got dark:

Image

Front angle, top up. The car's paint job isn't the best, its not the original colour either. We plan on either restoring it to the original colour, or choosing something a bit different that will still look good.

Image

Front view. Sorry its a bit blurry, I was excited hehe. Looks good from here too. Bit of a scratch on the windshield, can't see it in the picture, but it was probably made by the (very slow) windshield wipers.

Image

Front angle, top down. The top is a bit ripped, going to be replaced. The boot also has a small rip in it. Some chips in the paint job in a few random places, but all in all it still looks great.

Image

Last but not least, the interior. Once again sorry for the blurry picture. It doesnt look as good as this in person, although its still in relatively good condition. Small tears on the lower console. One thing the previous owner mentioned that I also noticed is the seemingly rare light-blue interior. I haven't seen this anywhere so far in pictures of other Spiders online, and I haven't come across any interior replacement parts of the same colour. I was curious what you all knew about this colour, how rare it really is, and if any of you know places where I could find parts of the same colour. If it truly is rare I'd like to keep it that colour and choose a paint job around it.

One last thing, I believe when we repaint it we may go with the original colour as mentioned before, or possibly I have been considering painting it white with racing stripes down the front the same colour as the interior. These are the only two ideas I have thought up so far, and I'm not going to be painting it for a little while. I was wondering if anyone had a blank image of this car that I could use in a drawing program or something preview what it might look like. Or if anyone has come across images of something similar that may help aswell. Again these are just some of my first ideas and I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, going to drive it around for a few months to get used to it and see if anything needs to be done. More ideas may come to me.

All in all I love this car already, and can't wait to drive it around more. I promise you all I'll keep it safe and running smoothly. I've looked around these forums earlier while I was waiting to go and pick it up, and I've seen alot of great information and you all seem like great people. I'm very excited and comforted to have this resource to better inform me on anything I need to know about this wonderful car.

Very nice presentation of the car and of yourself, Nick! I look forward to meeting you in person one day. Welcome to the Forum. Mark your calendar for the big even coming up in early July, in your area, the Fiat Freak Out. It's a great event, held annually, and you are fortunate that it is close to where you live this year! There, you'll see many a car similar to your own, and a variety of different things that folks have done to maintain and customize their cars. You'll go home with lots of ideas, for sure.

Hey Nick, welcome to the forum! Glad to have you aboard. Our first Spider was a 1979, we had it when we got married in 1980. Your car is something to be exited about. Congratulations, and good luck with it. Thanks for the pictures, it's always fun to see a new member's baby.

I wasn't aware of anything like this, where exactly is it being held and where? If theres a website I'd be very interested in checking it out. That is certainly something I plan to attend if at all possible.

Thank you both for the warm welcomes, I'm excited to get to know you all (and your cars) better.

welcome Nick. Glad to hear you're so excited about the car. Read up as much as possible so little surprises don't dampen your enthusiasm. The light blue interiors were'nt real common, and by now most of them have been replaced. You'll have a hard time finding replacement parts in that color. Most everything will have to be dyed since most of the reproduction stuff is black.
Don't worry so much about changing the car and asking for approval here; restore the car any way you want to enhance your ownership and experience.

Here's a blue interior for ya: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/car/638207862.html

I was so close to buying it, but decided I didn't want to fly from KS to WA and drive it back 1900+ miles and shipping is a whopping $800.

I'm keeping my eye out for something closer to Kansas.

EDIT: also, since the console was damaged in that car too, I found this on ebay: Blue-Console-Cap-Overlay

Welcome to our humble forum, Nick! It looks like you found yourself a very nice Spider to start with. I can't believe I'm saying this (what's wrong with me, guys?) but part of the joy of owning a Spider is working on it and feeling the satisfaction of making it better than before. You'll learn so much once you get started and will come to appreciate it for the unique car it is, and it's great you have your father helping you. Being a British Leyland fan, he'll even come around to our way of thinking! :P
Please do consider a trip to the Poconos this summer. There promises to be over 100 cars there and you'll get to meet many of us personally. Don't worry about whether your car is show quality. Our main objective is to check out other cars, meet the owners and enjoy the comaraderie. Our cars are a work in progress and are to be driven.

or, in Denise's case continual work on a car that USED to be driven.

har har har. Are you ready for some new curse words, Denise?

FYI- Nick.... Denise just got an X 1/9, and it is giving her fits. Spiders are a breeze to work on in comparison.

Mike, my car gets driven often and I'm still working on it...except now I'm just replacing parts I've already replaced before. It's a vicious cycle. The Devil X is a completely different story. It's just plain vicious. I think I've come up with a paint scheme for that car though, if it ever gets out of punishment. I may paint it all black with the Devil's face in red on the hood with pitch forks for stripes. What do ya think?

that sounds like a great scheme. and i know whatcha mean about replacing parts that were just replaced. I am on my third speedo cable in less than a full year....all on the same car.

and, you can't make me; i just refuse to go back and redo all that work i did last spring on the Spitwad wiring. I am NOT chasing down those elusive grounds. how does a ground get lost anyway? do they just fall off, or something? is that why we call the flat spot under our feet ground? cuz, so many automotive electrical grounds fall down off the car?

Spitfire for sale, cheap. bring your own grounds.

Thanks for the information on the parts. I still haven't decided if I'm going to keep the original or change it to black. The main reason we want to keep it the original is because the seats are in almost perfect condition, and its hard to justify redoing the entire interior with perfectly fine seats. I am tempted by the lack of paint restrictions black brings, so maybe I'll end up changing it, still havent decided, have plenty of time though.
