Paint Suggestions

Post by davery »

After removing most of the trim it looks like my original person may not be able to paint my car. On the off chance I will ask, does anyone know someone in southwestern Ohio that does paint work?

Although maybe I should do it. How many cans of spray paint do you think it would take? j/k

Haha D, go flat black, use stove paint! It lasts! Should only take 50 cans to make it right...
That sucks ( are we aloud to say that?) that your guy backed out!
There has to be someone not too far from you. Good luck!

He didn't really back out. I think there is a medical situation that he has not really talked with me about. I am going to take it around to a couple of places next week.

Don't laugh! Around 20 years ago, I painted 3 cars with spray cans. I think it took around 20 cans each. I used a plastic trigger handle that clipped in to the standard rim around the nozzle and it worked great. The hardest part was the roof, which was hard to get smooth in the quick-drying summer heat. :) I found the Krylon ones lasted pretty well, but the cheap K-mart paint chalked out within a year. I wouldn't suggest it now, but hey, when you don't have a lot of money, it's a lot of bang for the buck!

I bet there are many of us who have painted cars with cans and rollers.
24 years ago I painted my Saab with a roller while working in the boatyard. I used Imron and tipped it off with a foam brush. Glossy black, beautiful, shocking, until we ran out of beer waiting for it to dry. It had skinned over so we took off to the bar. Would have been fine if it didn't rain :?
I drove that car for 2 years with the flat black alligator skin finish!
It was great :D

When I was a kid I had a 1957 MB 219 (gas) that was a rust bucket but a lot of fun. 24 cans of rustoleum gave it a surprisingly nice paint job in my garage, after a good washing and drying in the sun. I drove that thing for years and it still looked great!

If you're serious about potentially doing it yourself just go to harbor freight and buy aN automotive spray gun and some decent paint. The biggest concern will be moisture in the line from the big ass compressor you're gonna need which I would get off Craigslist secondhand. If you have a compressor shop in town they should be able to help you manage the moisture issue...

Or better yet on a budget strip all you can, wet sand to get a decent surface then take it to a budget shop like Macao or something...

Auto paint supply houses and harbor freight carry a screw-on, in-line air filter. I screw mine on the air input of the gun. They are a one or 2 use and then throw away. work like a champ to get oil and water out of your airline. I was fighting fish eye issues until i discovered these little babies.

If I decided to do the body work, how about answers to a couple of questions. I have several small dings like hail damage and such. I assume I try and level from the back side and then fill. Would I sand to metal and prime prior to filling? Also, I have a small rust spot on the reat quarter about the size of a half dollar. I do not have the ability to weld, how could I fix this?

The have kits for pulling small dents from the outside. you glue on a puller then dissolve the glue with a solvent after you've pulled them out. If you can get to the back side, you can pound them out. Any place you did pounding, take it down to metal before bondo or primer. The rust hole can be fixed with fiberglass. If you can get to the back side, all the better. Look up on the web how to do such a repair. there are a few sites that go into great detail with pictures that can guide you thru. Remember, fiberglass produces surface bubbles that are very difficult to fill. When you try to spray over them with primer, the paint just fisheyes around the bubble. Once the fiberglass has dried, wash the surface a few times with acetone or lacquer thinner and dry with paper towels while its still wet. This will give you a sandable surface.
