Lights

Post by ROOK1 »

I need some help with my lights. I and the PO may have messed things up. Here is what I need to know. I have a toggle switch and a lever on the column for the lights. I need to know what controls what and when. I thought I read somewhere that the lights only work when the key is on. Is this true? My headlights (only) will work with the lever when the key is off and the switch is in the middle position. When I move the switch to the top, I then get markers, tails and headlights while using the lever.

I think knowing what position the wires go in on the switch and on the ignition switch may help me with this issue. The ignition wires were removed by the PO and I am having difficulty getting it right. I have found 2 different diagrams on this.

Switch I have a Brn+Blk Grn and Wht/Blk

Any pictures you have of the light and ignition switches will help me greatly.

Edit: I think I figured out the first light "problem". Here is how I see it. The switch has 3 positions. 1- Lights off. 2- Allows the headlights to be on for daytime running w/o markers. 3- Markers and headlights with dash lights for night. The lever will turns off the headlights, high and low beams when switch is in position 3. Key does NOT have to be on.

Am I correct?

Problem 2.

All of my markers work. When I use my left turn signal the front inside light blinks and the outer is the marker. I believe this to be correct. When I use my right blinker it causes the front marker to blink and the true blinker does nothing. Does anyone know what might cause this? Related to my first problem?

What year is your car? Here's out of the 72 owners manual:

Lighting switch (toggle)
Up = all lights OFF
With ignition key in:
Down = parking and taillights, headlight low or high beams and flashes (pull lever to you for headlights to flash)
With ignition key removed:
Center (night parking only) = parking and taillamps
Down = all lights off

Wiring for switch:
V = violet
H = brown and black
I = green
L = white/black

High/low beam change over switch lever:
(with lighting switch down and key in switch)
up = low beams
down = high beams

Wiring for lever:
B = brown
c = grey/red
g = green
d = dark blue

Wiring for ignition switch:
INT = light blue/red and black
30 = brown
50 = red
15 = light blue/black and pink
30/1 = black

model year is important on this one.

for the '78 - '82 (and maybe earlier) the toggle switch on the left corner of the dash is a three position switch.
all lights off is up
running and dash lights regardless of key position is middle
all lights on with key in on position is down

the rear paddle on the left side of the steering column controls the beam selector for the headlights. up is low beams and down is high beams.

of course, we all have issues with previous owners. electrical issues seem to run at the highest of the frustration lists. since most of us have been there....we gladly help out.

when the lights act up and blink screwy or don't blink at all.... the first thing you wanna consider is re-establishing the ground connections in that circuit...and the nearby circuits as well. Electricity must have a ground to work. sometimes it takes screwy paths to find that ground. when that happens, all kinds of weird lights act funny.

It is a 71.

I don't have a Violet wire on the switch so this may be why it works with he key off. My Brn/Blk is also jumperd to the "lone" tab on the back of the switch. Is this where the Violet wire goes? I will go look for a violet wire.

Thanks for the help guys.

It says with the key either in the switch or out of the switch. The ignition switch doesn't have to be on. the violet wire goes to the separate fuse for the cigarette lighter, so find the fuse holder for the cigarette lighter and see if there's a violet wire coming from it. Maybe you can trace it through the bundle to find the other end.

Should the switch have a jumper like it does? Or is this some sort of fix? Thanks for the advice I will hunt for the violet wire.
